How to say no to a job offer after accepted.

Specialties Geriatric

I applied to two nursings homes the first one offered me only Per Diem job I took it because something is better than nothing. The second nursing home offered me a full time position $5.00 less than the Per Diem job but is more secure. I accepted but I am not going to be able to work per Diem in the other facility. Now my dilemma: How can I say no to the first facility before orientation start without closing the door? Should I call them by phone or go in person or send a card. I want to be very polite, so I do not close this door. Any sugestions? Thank you for your responses.

wow! congratulations for having two job offers. well done! anyway, my personal suggestion is to ring the recruitment in-charge directly and be honest that you're unable to work with them. You are still entitled to change your mind as you still did not sign a contract? if that is correct? it is best to be straight forward than be sorry later on. In that way, the employer can offer the job to others. cheers! :)

Just call them and say that while you appreciate their time that you've been given an offer for a full-time position and that right now you really need full time hours. They'll understand! Good luck!

Congratulations. Absolutely call and talk to someone in HR about it (and if you got the job through knowing someone or a referral to a manager, talk to the manager too) and just say you got full time and need the hours and BENEFITS!

On the other hand ... with $5.00/hr less in the paycheck, you might like a little extra money. If the per diem facility is open to it, you may be able to stay on with the understanding that you'd only be available for limited time ... say one shift per month that fits with your full-time job.

They may take you up on it if, say, you were willing to work around holidays or be on call for a holiday. Facilities have a hard time keeping staffed when so many want time off or call in.

The answer all depends on what will work for you personally.

Thanks for your responses. I called HR and they understood. Thanks again.
