Nursing Students General Students

Published

Our facility is now investigating a Facebook thread about nursing students acting inappropriately while on clinical rotation. Remember, social media is not protected by privacy laws. I saw the actual thread - and so will the BON if the facility determines who needs to be investigated. BEWARE.

Don't vilify Facebook. Vilify people who use it stupidly. Believe it: there ARE ways to use social media responsibly, just like alcohol. Don't blame the tools for poor outcomes, blame the people who don't know or don't care to learn how to use them. There are ways to lock down Privacy settings that are steel tight. You only have as much exposed to the public on Facebook as you choose to.

I don't think anyone here is vilifying FB, but rather, saying to be cognizant of what you post. I totally agree that it is the user that is at fault (like many tools that can be used for destruction or function, depending on the user). We have to be aware that employers and schools are now looking at FB and other social media when considering candidates, and if you have a mutual friend on FB, that person CAN look you up, even if you have your FB on lockdown.

It never ceases to amaze me when people "air their dirty laundry" on FB. It's like they completely lose their filter.

I used to work in the corporate world and they would always do a Google search on a particular candidate to see if anything cropped up. All incriminating photos led to FB. We had a great candidate that everyone loved. Once HR found all the drunken revelry pics (recently added, too!), they were out of the running.

I see the younger kids in my class doing the same thing and it makes me cringe. It's hard enough to get a job as a new grad. Don't make it even harder!

True, security settings should be as secure as possible.

But at the same time, don't fool yourself into thinking that just because your privacy settings are "steel tight" that anything you post on Facebook or other social media will remain completely private. All it takes is one of your friends or contacts to share/screenshot/copy-and-paste something that you posted, someone to hazard a guess as to your true identity based on your posting history, or someone to guess your password and hack into your account...and what you thought was private really isn't as secure as you thought.

Our school really monitors us, being a private Christian university. People always stock on facebook, so just make sure that even your private life on facebook is clean. I've learned to filter my facebook and keep it professional, even though it is my personal social media. Nothing is private!

Oh and this may be because I am friends on facebook with a couple of professors and even my dean of nursing! :o|

I have seen several things that shocked me: people posting pictures of themselves giving birth (as in baby crowning) and their kids undressed for various reasons (ex- on the potty, in a kiddie pool). Do they not realize that your friends and their friends may not always be what you think? It's like a pervert and pedophile red carpet was rolled out! I try to warn them, but de-friend them if they won't stop.

I vilify FaceBook every chance I get. FaceBook is evil!

Which has nothing what so ever to do with security settings...it has to do with keeping you private stuff OFF social media.
