Hi gang,

This is my first summer off in ten years. I have been hanging out enjoying my three children for a week now and I am bored silly! After doing pre-reqs for the past year, not having something to study just seems wrong!:rotfl:

I start my nursing clinicals in September and would like to become familiar with some of the common medications seen in the hospital. Any one willing to make a list of the top ten medications you see administered??? Feel free to list more... it's going to be a looooong summer for me!

Thanks!

Good list, MLOS!

I've given a lot of Reglan. Also gave a lot of Zofran and Toradol this past semester. Don't know how common that is.

Enjoy your time off, Michelle!

I think it probably differs also on the clinical type -- LTC vs. critical care, etc. I'm in critical care so I'd add:

Potassium Chloride

Lopressor

Morphine

Ativan

Haldol

Versed

And lots of drips like:

Dopamine

Dobutamine

Esmolol

Levophed

Neosynephrine

Epi

Amiodorone

Cardene

Loads of Propofol

Another good place to start/study drugs would be the ACLS drugs: Epi, Atropine, Lidocaine, Amiodorone, Bicarb, etc. (can't think of them all right now but Google on ACLS protocols and you'll find them).

Have fun!! :)

Ditto everyone else's list..... plus Heparin and Lovenox. Seems like if it wasn't for those two and insulin, I probably would never give injections!

Lasix

Protonix

Lisinopril

Lipitor

Klonopin

Wellbutrin

Heparin

Lovenox

Insulin

Ativan

Ambien

All very good suggestions. I definatly agree with the Insulin answer. Know all the different kinds, how to give, how to draw up, When to give etc... When I took my NCLEX review yesterday I swear I had like 15 questions on Diabetic Ketoacidosis and all the related insulin questions. :uhoh3:

That is a great idea about looking up the medications. We have medication sheets that need to be filled out on every medication that our client will be taking the day we care for them, including PRN medications. Also, if you have the time, look up the medications on the crash cart, or medications associated with surgery. If you are really, really, wanting to work on learning the medications buy the pharmacology text that your college uses, and become familiar with the medication classifications. Knowing the classification of a particular medication helps to pull up information from your memory bank about how and why a medication is being used, instead of trying to learn each medication individually.

Thank you so much for everyone's help! Excellent lists! I am going to be busy this weekend making up study sheets.

Have a great weekend,
