Top 10 Nursing Supplies

I start school in August. What would be your top ten things to buy before school starts in relation to school supplies. Not nursing essentials like BP cuff etc...just for studying and organization purposes. Thanks y'all :)

Flash cards, or a flash card app like flashcardlet for pharmacology. A really good, detailed planner to keep all of your classes/clinicals/labs/assignments straight. It can be extremely overwhelming!

Our school just started letting students print for free in the library 2 semesters ago, even though we've always payed $150.00+ in technology or resource fees. We do not have open computer labs in our health science building that allow you to print. We have to go to the library.

I pay a fee every semester, and I still have to pay $0.10 per page. I thought I'd be broke from Childcare costs...I think it's the printing that's breaking me!

1.Get a planner that will last the full duration of your program i.e. 2 year planner for 2 year program-i'm in an accelerated program and it's cool to see how far you've come and how quickly time goes by.

2. If you're an at home study kind of person then get a durable desk that can handle the giant books you'll have plus your computer.

3.Ear plugs! I never used them before school, but whether at home or at Starbucks & more recently during major exams they have come in handy.

4. A "whining buddy"=someone who listen to you when your classmates no longer want to or are too overwhelmed themselves. Someone that will be willing to encourage you no matter what.

5. A just in case bag with a set of clothes, emergency items, etc in case you're too far from home or at a clinical site all day just have the bag in your trunk.

6. A Nursing School Survival Guide book- I got the Mosby's Tour Guide to Nursing School and read it before my first semester and definitely gave me some insight to nursing school in general.

7. I know everyone isn't a fan of them, but my rolling backpack has saved me from the back aches that would be possible with a normal backpack...it's much better than carrying 5 separate bags at one time.

8. Hoodies & sweatpants for those days that you just don't care for and just need to get to school...which will be most days

9. Note cards the all sizes really, but I've become very fond of the big 5 X 10 ones because you can fit a lot on them & use 5 big cards vs. 20 small ones

10. Self motivation...at the end of the day your willingness to push yourself to work hard and do your best is what will make you a great nursing student and keep you on your feet when everything else might be looking negative.

Preparation is the best thing you can do! Best wishes!!

I agree with earplugs for exams. I use those silicone ones you roll into a ball that mold to your ear. They help to muffle the coughing in the class that for some reason only starts up during an exam, and our squeaky chairs.

Wow! Very good list!

A new battery for your laptop--in case you're to far away from a plug during class. Plus, you don't have to kill a tree if your prof posts their power points online.

An iPhone--great for recording lectures, looking up lab values on the fly, setting reminders, and keeping track of your schedule.

water bottle, lunch bag, great crock pot recipe book, good planner, LOTS of highlighters, post-it flags, good shoes, good desk or work space, good condensed study guide sheets (I like this and this).

And be social! My best study guides have been the friends I've made.

Desk. Definitely get a desk. Preferably in a room that you can shut the door to. It has made such a difference to me. Boyfriend knows that once that door is shut he'd better find some way to entertain himself and leave me alone! It's my study room when I'm sitting at that desk and time flies there. I get so much more done now that I got that desk. Sounds crazy, but it is so much better than sprawling out on the floor, hiding at the library or coffee shop, and pushing everyone's crap off the tiny dining room table in a vain attempt to get things done.

Even without a desk, find a place in your house, designate it as yours (you may have to battle for your territory, but even if it requires frequent urination on the door jam, don't back down!),and it will be the best thing you can do for yourself.

The Uncalendar! What a life-saver.

Just ordered mine- and the notebooks and loose leaf paper too!

Me too! I got the full sized one and can't wait to start filling (and crossing) it out :)
