Too much make-up?

Okay so this is a silly thread but another thread peeked my curiosity. Do you work with or see nurses who wear tons of make-up? Do you think wearning a lot of make-up to work is unprofessional? Do you think pt's/families care or even notice? I don't want anyone to be mean about this pls. :nono:

I'll start:

Once I saw a nurse (I did not work at this hospital but had family there) who had on so much make-up she looked absolutely silly. She was probably in her early to mid 40's and she looked like she was in an 80's music video. She had her lips drawn on waaay outside her natural lip line making her look somewhat clownish and had so much cover-up on it looked like it was 1/4 inch thick. She had on excessive amts of blush and eye make-up. She definately looked odd. She worked in the OR and had her hair covered so her face took center stage. It was kind of shocking and my family and I just stared wide eyed at her. I thought that the amount of make-up she had on was very unprofessional. She wasn't done up like she was going to a club or anything like that. She had enough make-up on for 3 or 4 ppl. I love wearing make-up and wear more than most of my friends but even I know there is a point when it's just too much. :chuckle

maybe she enjoys colors?

maybe the lighting isn't very good when she's putting on the make up?

maybe she doesn't realize that her make-up is so noticeable?

I would bet a dollar that is it.

I have very fair and very uneven skin. I have to do full make-up or I look like a ghost. I spend alot of time trying to find the right shades of brown/beige to look natural unless I'm going somewhere with my girlfriends....I have always prided myself in how I did my makeup.

I'm in my late 30's...I have had glasses my entire life b/c of my stygmatism (sp?) left me unable to wear contacts....until recently. I felt it would be more sanitary with nursing school.

The FIRST DAY I wore them to class, more than one person said, "wow, your make-up looks really good today."

I may be reading too much into those comments..but it does make me wonder what I looked like before.

CD playing, coffee brewing, a cat at my side, my MAC in front of me and endless possibilities. God, I love my special time I set a side for myself every morning. Life is good!

I agree though. The trick to good application is adapting it to your outfit. That is part of the fun.

It doesn't bother me...providing the makeup stays where it should :)

I have a classmate that really likes the eyeliner and mascara and can make up her eyes beautifully. She wore that look to our first clinical day...and halfway through the shift the makeup started to migrate. By the end of the shift, she had the racoon look.

She's scaled back on the eye makeup in clinical since then ;)

Maybe she's bipolar and in the manic phase? :chuckle

Seriously, I do feel too much makeup as you described in unprofessional. I only wear eyeliner and mascara on a daily basis. I just don't feel like we are there for a fashion show, to seduce a doctor, etc.

Anyway, who knows why she does her makeup like that. Maybe she was a burn victim and is horribly scarred?

To each their own. As nurses we are taught to respect everyone's individual choices and to try not to judge those choices. I know we all do and I am no saint by any means. Just my 2 cents.

Good point, nicely stated!

Given my choice between a competent nurse who wears a pound of makeup and one who wears none and goes just to collect a paycheck, I'll take the make up any day.

As I learned when I was raising kids, you have to chose your battles. Some things are just not worth wasting time and energy worrying about, particularly when they don't affect you.

I love make-up and get a little wild with it sometimes. I do wear different make-up to work than I do for a night out or whatever, though, just because I don't want to draw too much attention to myself. And I do not work in a hospital right now.

I guess I don't care too much what others wear. I don't care about wild hair color, tattoos, piercings, whatever. Nothing really seems to bother me too much.
