Yes, that is how it is in nursing school. We always have chapters and chapters to read. I think that we had almost 1000 pages to read for one unit . It's hard to keep up with, but you'll do better if you can do the readings. Take good notes in class and listen. Sometimes the instructor gives little hints on something that might be on the test.

Ok future nursing students...............DON'T PANIC!!!!

Yes, this is the usual amount of reading for a unit, but let me share some advice.

If you have an instructor that gives great lectures you will not have to read as much, just skim the chapters, and read only the things she did not cover or the things that you need more clarification on. This is what has worked for me.

It also depends on what type of learner you are. If you are more visual you may wan to comcentrate on the videos, or computer modules. If you lears best from reading it then you may have to read it all.

Also, I find it best to at least skim the material that is going to be covered in class the night before. It will help you understand the material and you will take better notes because you are familliar with the terms.

My instructors acctually require that the computer assignments are due the day of the fisrt lecture on that module. It helps if the topic is allready famillair, people take part in the lecture more. In no way are you expected to know the material well.

Good luck to all!

It's amazing that even with all the reading we have to do we seem to find time to post on this website!!!

What??? Over 20 chapters to read in a week??? Plus a ton of other work???

What percentage of that will be retained???

Seems kinda nuts to me.

Good luck, Bucky!

I think I'd rather go into it blindly and just know that it is going to be hard....that is down right scary, but if we all want it bad enough...we will go for it.

Has anyone ever done well in Nursing school? Is it totally unrealistic to set a goal to graduate with honors (3.5)?

Just curious...

Good luck all!!!

I totally freaked at the amount of reading and homework due for the first week. I marched my self right up to one of my instructors and told her there is no way I could possible read that much and retain even half the material. Plus, each insturctor passes out a hand out at the beginning of the lecture that generally runs between 15-40 pages.

The instructor said, concentrate on the lectures and the material in the handouts. Just skim over the assigned reading material from the book so I have an idea what is being covered for the day. I have done that and feel oh so much better. I actually feel like I can handle it now. I tape record each lecture then go back and add notes to the handouts.

But, I am really freaking out about the first test. We have been told the test material comes from both the books, lectures, videos, and hand outs.

Speaking strictly as an LPN and based only on the LPN program. We had syllabisis that looked impossible to get through. Fortunately the instructor made it clear that if she covered it in lecture it would be covered on the test. So I found a good study buddy we took excellent notes and then we would skim the reading material highlighting what she had covered. We would then get together and have in depth discussions on our notes. I finished with a GPA of 3.86 I sucked at pediatrics. I realize that RN program is more in depth and more difficult but this is what worked for me. Hope it helps someone.

Bucky!!!!!!!!

LOL that is just what its like!

Would you say you've adjusting ok to this demanding schedule.... or is it still rough?

My schedule looks 99% like yours....

At first I thought i was gonna drown..... but am finding myself doing ok... finding my groove....

Bevi's nursing school tip o' the day:

Use sticky page tabs to label chapters in your larger books... Name the chapter on the label, stick em on, and you have a quick way to find what you need when you need it.

(there are removable sticky labels so's ya don't ruin your pages.)

Then, while everyone is shuffling thru pages trying to find what they need, you have time to take a sip of water and adjust your butt in those uncomfortable chairs.

nursepru,

It is not unrealistic to graduate with honors. It is very hard but it is possible. The first week of class we were told if you are an A student now you will be a B student in nursing. For the most part it has been true.(I am in my 4th and final semester) I have recieved A-, B+, and B's in Nursing and I was a 4.0 student before nursing.

Good Luck!

And actually DO your objectives! haha

Those are designed for key points and are very helpful. So far, so good, anyhoo.

nursebucky.....my husband asked me, "You finished studying?".....I was like, "I will NEVER finish studying! There's no such thing as finished!"

Haha

Our instructor actually TOLD us there is no way we will have time to read every word of the assigned reading. She pointed out the obvious and said that the thing to do is skim the chapters, finding the important points and taking note of those.
