This is so crazy - Do I Need All These Books?

Nursing Students General Students

I will be starting nursing school in August and I just received my book list. I need to purchase 10 books for only 4 classes that will cost me $500+ and it says all of the books are "required latest editions" in big bold letters.

I searched online and only 2 of these books can be rented, the rest must all be purchase new because some come with access codes and spiral book binding.

Mind you this is not a for profit program but I still find the pricing a tad bit extreme.

So to all new or former nursing students: did you purchase the required books, and did you actually ever used them often for class?

10 books for only 500$? Consider yourself lucky then..

That was just a brief estimate but after going back and truly calculating the price it will cost me $894 if this price doesn't fluctuate when it gets closer to August.

That sounds similar to what I had to pay in books before the first term. I bought all of mine because we use them throughout the program. Not just during that term.

Lucky, this book list states its only for 1st semester and we will be receiving a book list before every start of the semester sadly.

You might want to contact the instructor to see if the access code is truly needed for the course. I had books that came with the books but we didn't use the online content for the class. You also might be able to rent the book and pay for the access code for the semester. I was able to rent all of my books in nursing school. It was far cheaper than buying and selling it back.

What site are you using for textbook rentals?

That is not to say we use each text each term. I find it useful to be able to refer back to certain books, especially when doing assignments where we have to cite rationals for nursing interventions. I use my fundamentals of nursing and medical surgical nursing books all the time.

We have to buy a book package that is $1000, granted its most of the books we'll need for the next 2 years.

Good to know, so those two will be my first priority in purchasing then.

I start my nursing program in september and that around how much mine will end up being, and i also have to get all the newest editions. I personally am buying all my books because you never know when youll want to go back and reference

I purchased mine, the publisher came out and gave us a package that was about $900 that included all the online content, and pdf versions of the books with these awesome features! For example, we can search across our entire library at once and it gives us all the related content, which makes writing reports really easy. Plus, we can share our notes and subscribe to each others notes through the online system but only if we purchased the package. My group got together and decided it was worth it.

same here my books came up to 1500 this semester but we will use these books our whole time in nursing school. Im going into my second year and there is two new books i must get also. And yes we use our books all the time. Your books is where you will get your information when your doing homework and when you go to clinical. A girl didn't buy her books and she ended up failing and being kicked out of the programs within three months. She was always asking to use someone else's books.
