  1. Should I Retake Anatomy 1 & 2

Hello All!

I am excited to say I have been accepted into a Nursing program starting in the spring! I have been working on all of my pre-reqs at a Community College so I will only have to take the actual nursing courses once I am there.

My concern I'm coming across is that I took Anatomy 1 in Spring of 2012 and Anatomy 2 in Fall of 2012. Over a year ago. I am a little worried that the knowledge isn't as fresh in my mind as I would like it to be.

I did perfectly fine in both courses with a B+ and a C+ respectively. I was wondering if you guys thought it might be better to retake these courses in Nursing School? I am recently unemployed, but have enough financial aid to live off of, so Time and Money are not an issue.

Would it be a waste of time and I should just stick to the actual nursing courses because everything I will need will be in nursing courses? Or will taking Anatomy again only help me? I'm also concerned if a lot of my fellow nursing students who are also taking Anatomy at the same time as the Nursing courses might have an easier time than I since the information is fresher in their mind.

I really appreciate your guys' opinion!

I took A and P like 8 years ago and I'm doing just fine in NS...coming up on my final semester in January. I brushed up on A&P prior to starting my 1st semester but I didn't go crazy.

Unless you KNOW you can make an A, it's not worth it.

This. For the purpose of raising your GPA only, if possible.

I'm glad you decided not to retake it yet. You passed the class and the grade got you into your program so that's what matters.

No, that is not what matters. What matters is KNOWING HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY. What matters is knowing the difference between the Proximal Convoluted Tubule and the Distal Convoluted Tubule. What matters is knowing the difference between the Pulmonary Artery and the Coronary Artery. What matters is knowing the difference between a Trapezium and a Trapezius. What matters is knowing what you need to know to be a good nurse.

OP, if you review and find that you remember enough that you don't feel that you will be lost in lecture, then don't retake the classes. But if you know deep down inside that you are not going to know what the instructor is talking about when they lecture about cellular respiration or disease processes, retake the classes. It is information that you need to be a successful nursing student and a successful nurse.

Depends on your schools repeat policy. Some places you can not get permission to retake a class with a C or above. Does your nursing program have a limit on how many classes you can retake without being forced out of the program? My school you can only retake 2 classes...and that includes pre reqs and nursing courses..if you have to retake a 3rd you are out.

Honestly? Nobody could pay me enough to go through that hell again, lol. Review some lightly. Often times nursing books have a pg or 2 in the beginning of each chapter on A&P. Nursing is also more critical thinking than memorizing.

Anatomy Coloring Book. No joke. I used that between core classes and nursing classes. Very good refresher.

I second this, especially if you're a visual learner.

Please DO NOT retake this class!!! I just graduated from RN school just 1 year ago. I took A&P I&II in 1990, and did not retake it and I did just fine in class. Please take my word for it, You will have so much studying for exams, assignments, care plans, headaches and crying to keep you busy for 2 life times!! Please don't add to it by taking an additional class that your school is not requiring you to retake. Study your Med-Surg book, it will have A&P in it for each system. Plus I read that you just took the class a year or 2 ago, just because you didn't make an A, doesn't mean you don't know the material. Just RELAX and take a deep breath, put on your BIG GIRL UNDIES, cause this will be HARD!! But you can do it.

OH, and get some sleep now cause when school starts you won't get anymore:no:.

Specializes in public health, women's health, reproductive health.

No way I would repeat that course under those circumstances. It's not necessary, IMO.

Hahah it makes me feel a lot better to read your guys' posts. I actually really enjoyed Anatomy. I even enjoyed dissecting cats.

I am taking Nursing Fundamental 1A and 1B this semester (split into half semesters as one class). I took all my pre-reqs at a community college so I shouldn't have a problem with retakes if I needed to. I only took each anatomy once.

But I think I'll do better by having less classwork my first semester than anything. I'll have an easier semester than the planned curriculum for other students which is the nursing course, anatomy 1, english 1, and intro to psych. I'll spend whatever free time I have on catching up with anatomy. I actually found out I already own the anatomy coloring book. I must have never used it when I took my first anatomy course.

I personally would not retake it, but I see no harm in reviewing information. I got a C in both parts of A&P, and have done exceptionally well in my nursing courses. For me A&P reminded me of the Charlie Brown clips where the teacher was wah wah wah, it was just hard to follow, but after putting it into practice in regards to nursing, suddenly it all began to click. Some people just learn differently, grades are not the only indication of a good nurse, and a good student.
