shoes and heel pain

okay, I have been in clinicals for 2 days now and my heels are killing me! I wear New Balance walking shoes, but I am not sure if they are right for me. I have noticed that if I am standing still, the pain is worse in my right heel and sometimes it makes my right lower back hurt as well. Anyone have any recommendations for some good shoes that eliminate foot pain or is this something I'm gonna have to get used to?

I have a pair of "Remedy" leather slip-on shoes that I really love. Not sure if that's the brand name, but that's what it says on the soles. :)

I like my Z-Coils...they are quite comfy, especially for those days that you do alot of standing and running around...they have helped take care of some of my foot/eg/calf/ and back pains...

For regular tennis shoes, i always have to have some sort of heel cushions.

(and note: at the bottom of this thread is ads for heel pain products. Maybe something to read about?)

I've had foot pain. I would say try different shoes and inserts. But if the pain continues, go to your doctor so you know what's causing the pain. I'm just a pre-nursing student, but have had lots of foot problems. For me, it has to be Danskos, Birkestocks or my custom made inserts to keep my feet happy.

Whatever you do, take care of your heel problem NOW. If you are just starting out, you have years to go where you'll be on your feet. One recommendation that was helpful for me is to make sure to try on any new shoes when your feet are tired so you know how they'll feel. If you can afford a good shoe, buy it. I have been in the nursing field for almost 22 years and now have to step out of a profession I have dearly loved because I have a foot that can't take the pounding anymore after a surgery.

Been there, done that.....one word answer: Birkenstocks. Well worth the investment. Feet have not hurt since and it's been over 10 years!

Specializes in MICU for 4 years, now PICU for 3 years!.

I have a pair of NurseMates Doves that I just love! My feet and legs were killing me each day at the end of clinical so much, that all I wanted to do was come home, take a warm bath, and go to bed. Now, with my new Doves, I am feeling wonderful!

Many people don't realise that hospitals are like walking on concrete all day. It sure does pay to find good shoes or you'll regret it later. Try going to a good sport store. They should watch you walk, not just try to get your $$. I went to a physiotherapist, they can assess for walking problems, also heel pain can be caused by arch problems and they can give you exercises that really help. Whatever the reason, you're right to get on it now--- or you'll be limping like me, in pain and having trouble hurrying to codes, playing tennis or wearing ski boots!

My favorites are Skechers - never have any aches & pains if I'm wearing those. Eventually I think your body does adjust somewhat to being on your feet for long periods of time, but it does help to have comfortable shoes.

This probably will sound crazy, but I recently switched to Vans from my old favorites, New Balance. Sure, they're supposed to be skateboarder shoes, but they provide excellent support for my poor fallen arches, and the padding around the tongue and the ankle areas can't be beat. And hey, who cares what they look like, as long as they're white, comfortable, and CLEAN? :) (although I have had a few comments, all of them positive, from younger patients who think it's cool for a 46-year-old to wear skater shoes! :chuckle )
