School problem!!!

I don't think this counts as full bullying but..so in one of my science classes some students have been "picking on" me (I sound like a whiny baby saying that!) But it really bothered me today. In all my other classes people treat me fine! I have friends in other classes not everyone but nowhere near to pick on me.

In this class it's different and I'm usually laughed at for something stupid like last week someone made fun of how I cough of all things or when we're getting lab supplies I get shoved and told I'm in the way.

But for example today I asked a question about the animal we were dissecting and a student said to another student in the seats in front of me "she asked [insert my question] What a dumb a**" and laughed.

Then as we were cleaning up I was teased by the two students. And..I can't even say about what. I just know I got upset and said "leave me alone" and one girl said "you want to take this outside?" And as she came up right in my face i though "i shouldn't have said that" But the other girl said to her "come on she's not worth it" and honestly I don't know what I did that they dislike me so much! I don't do anything but my classwork. The teacher did tell the class I got the highest grade on the midterm. But give me a break noone has the highest grade in every class so who cares. I don't think I act like I'm smart I just do my work and talk to my lab partner who's fine to me.

Anyway it upset me a lot. I know I'll never see them again after this class is done (no nursing majors). I'm just getting tired of it I guess.

I'll just get through this class. It's almost over. Just it embarrasses me and I feel stupid when I get picked on in the class. One guy said I probably go home and spend 100 hours on the homework.

Any advice what I can say to just diffuse this?

These people should feel embarrassed -- not you. Their behavior is incredibly immature!!

Did you feel threatened when that one suggested you take it outside, or did you get the impression she was showboating?

And where is the instructor in all of this? You mean to tell me they see and hear nothing? When people go so far as to put their hands on you, it has gone too far and you should stand up for yourself. Shame on the instructor if they have observed this behavior and done nothing.

The girl could kick my butt but I was in school and saw a fight before that happened on school grounds. Security responded fast and removed the instigator. So even if she was serious I don't feel too threatened. I think she'd get expelled.

The teacher is in the classroom. It's half lecture and half lab. We are all dissecting different animals around the room. She walks around or stands at the front of the room looking up pictures to show us while we're working. It's already a lot of talking but she must have seen or heard because she seems to hear every thing (if someone asks another student a question she asks what the question is)

What the heck! The only thing I can think of is that they're intimidated by you because you get good grades. They're trying to make you feel like crap and bring you down. Maybe this will mean you won't work as hard... that's the only thing I can think of. Even though it makes absolutely no sense.

Either way, if that girl said "lets take this outside" after you asked to leave you alone, that's messed up. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this...

I was laughing with them while they laughed at me. I think doing that makes them think I'm not getting that I'm being made fun of so they leave me alone or they just get bored. I don't know but it works. Just I was having enough this morning. I was tired.

Thanks. Beats me. This is a freshman level entry bio class. People have complained about it that for a 100 level class it's hard and the teacher grades unfair (she will grade the seniors tougher than the under class people for ex). But still this isn't class for any competition.

Oh my goodness, I somehow missed the part about someone actually putting her hands on you!!! She crossed a HUGE line, and I would get campus security involved at that point. That is battery, and it's a crime.

Maybe I'll talk to the dean. Part of me is like "it's almost over though don't make waves." But I didn't sleep much last night and had it this morning! I guess I shouldn't only be propelled by lack of sleep to stand up for myself.

Wow, you brought back a memory. I was an ADN/RN and taking pre-reqs to get into BSN program at a local community college. I worked 3-11 shift so many times wore my white uniform to class. Turns out many were trying to get into that community college's ADN program. I came in once to find a "nasty gram" on the desk I usually sat at, anonymous. This happened after an exam where there was obvious cheating, (they were not even creative in cheating) & I had stayed after class to talk to the teacher about a possible visit to the hospital I worked at to the peds/nursery area as this was child development class. The nasty gram assumed I had stayed to tell about the cheaters, which was not discussed. I stood in front of the class and called out the "chickens***s/cowards on it. I also told them I was not going to pursue the field trip to the nursery, I was not going to waste my time for people who acted like they were in high school, (they really did). The teacher confirmed our conversation, that she knew about the cheaters, that we had not talked about it. Further told them that she doubted any one that needed to cheat in her class would become a nurse, something I did not have to worry about.

Consider approaching the instructor. Can you be moved away from these bothering you? Since the teacher told them you got the highest grade on the midterm, I sense jealousy here. Is this a small community college? As former faculty I know some students can be so competitive it can become unhealthy situation for others in the class, it takes the fun out of learning together. Which I never understood, if you get an A & I get a B, your A does not impact my learning.

Is it possible that these people have learned that you reported a cheating incident and are punishing you for it?

No they aren't in the nursing. It's a class for bio majors/minors.. not required for nursing.
