I always record mine (with permission). I only occasionally listen to them, but do share them via email with other classmates who might have missed that day. I did have one instructor (my physiology teacher) who spoke 100 mph and dispensed a huge amount of knowledge each hour that she taught. I listened to my tapes of her lectures because it was nearly impossible to grasp that much info that fast, so two listenings were very good for me.
I use a Olympus DVR, it's small, thrifty of batteries, and plugs right into my BUS port on my laptop for easy downloading/emailing of the audio file.
It's nice to have a back up like this if you happen to feel sick one day and therefore don't absorb the lecture like you normally would.
If you keep your lectures and keep good track of them, you can also use them to refresh your memory later on as needed.
I particularly liked to listen while doing some brainless task like exercises or housecleaning....
i dont like to record lecture. if you have the time to play back lectures, then thats great. I am not much of an auditory learner. I am more hands on and visual. I would look at powerpoints and words instead. if i dont understand i just go back into the textbook and reread it or discuss it with classmates or the instructor. Drawing helps for me too with tables and my own representation of the problem. Our nursing school was big on care maps. Helped to bring the connections between patho, care plan, and nursing dx.
I recorded all my lectures and played them in the car and when I was walking - even in the bathroom. I also used them with the power points in case I missed apoint. It helped me alot. I guess it just dependa on what type of learner you are. I do think they are very helpful so I would say give it a try and see how it works for you. I never had a professor tell me not to tape, they seem to be happy that I was taking it so seriously.
I used a recorder during my years completing my prereq's, and I found it very helpful. When I would study the lecture later on, I found that having that supplement to my notes was very useful. I was able to concentrate and retain the information better. I would find that I missed (or sometimes zoned out, I won't lie) some important things and also not having to worry that I couldn't write down what the professor said in time was nice, because I had it recorded. Sometimes the prof would lecture faster than I could keep up. Also when I didn't understand a particular part of the lecture, I was able to go back several times to listen to it.
I definitely plan to use a recorder in NS.
Im actually going to start my third semester as well. I started to record the lesson last semester and it worked out pretty good. It will help you a lot, so I definately think you should try it and use it. some students record the lesson and dont use it. but if you record it and go back home, listen to it and take notes , it will help you a lot. your memory retains a lot by doing it that way. Also try to buy one of those recorders that has a usb cable, that you hook it up to your pc. that way you can listen to it and take notes on word or etc..
I wish you the best in your third semester.
We almost there!@

Hi all, I will be starting third semester this September, and I was wondering if any of you had an opinion about the recording of lectures? I have not recorded lectures in my other semesters, but find that alot of students do this, any feelings on whether it helps or not? Thanks.
