Need help with an idea for a paper.. Anything would be appreciated!!

I have to write a paper over any bacteria that causes a disease. So I have to write about that disease, the bacteria that causes it, ect.. Anyone have any good idea for diseases caused by certain bacterias? Thanks for any help!!

I was going to suggest that you write about a disease that you are likely to see in your nursing practice. It will help you develop a good understanding of the etiology, pathophysiology and manifestations of the illness that will help you later in nursing. You might also want to write about one of the third world bacterial diseases that has been literally wiped out in the industrialized countries due to effective sanitation, water treatment and vaccination. You might want to write about one of the many diseases we vaccinate against in order to know just what the disease we are preventing is like since you are unlikely to see manifestations of these diseases in your practice. Those kinds of subjects will catch the attention of your instructor. Just my thoughts on this. Just looking through my nursing pathophysiology resource and my medical coding book I have come up with a list of common bacterial infections:

• food poisoning due to Salmonella
  
• pinkeye (various bacteria)
  
• gonorrhea
  
• listeriosis (Listeria monocytogenes)
  
• Bacterial meningitis

• Hansen's disease (leprosy) (Mycobacterium leprae) - as old as the Bible
  
• Bacterial pneumonia
  
• Meningococcal menigitis or encephalitis
  
• Typhoid fever (Salmonella typhi)
  
• Shigeliosis (disentery)
  
• Syphilis
  
• Tetorifice
  
• Toxic shock syndrome (due to Staphylococcus aureus)
  
• Tuberculosis
  
• Whooping cough (Pertussis) (Bordetella pertusis)
  
• Scarlet Fever, or Rheumatic fever (beta-hemolytic streptococci) - this one is so very common and results in rheumatic heart disease in later years if not adequately treated in children
  
• cholera (vibrio cholerae)
  
• Diphtheria (Corynebacterium diphtheriae)
  
• Gas Gangrene (due to Clostridium perfringens)
  
• E. Coli enteritis or Clostridium difficile colitis - this type of diarrhea typically goes through nursing homes like an epidemic
  
• Tularemia (deerfly fever or rabit fever) (due to Francisella Pasteurella)
  
• Brucellosis (gram-negative aerobic coccobacilli in dairy products)

FYI. . .prior to the discovery and invention of canning in the late 19th century, food poisoning was one of the primary killers of humans along with consumption (TB) and other infections that went septic. Improper canning, food storage and food handling can still result in diseases such as botulism and salmonella. We take for granted the work done by our public health departments today, but were it not for their vigilance and the knowledge we now have, our daily life would literally be lurking with danger due to potential bacteria in our food and water that has been almost obliterated through pasteurization and water treatment. There are very few foods on the grocery shelves that have not been pasteurized or undergone some sort of sterilization process to kill any unwanted bacteria in them and that includes the organic foods. Montezuma's Revenge is nothing to joke about.

I would choose one that had a dramatic impact on world history and/or society in general. That way, I could "spice up" my paper with some dramatic content about the effects of the disease.

For fun history (well to call it fun is like morbid..LOL) would certainly be legionella. I mean...have you ever wondered why the word legion is in there....look it up, it is actually quite a story! And to think it can live in air conditioning fluid!!!!!! WOW now that is a tough bacteria!

guardia, any zoonotic parasitic contaminant....bet it will be the only one! Did you know that we humans can contract canine/feline heartworms! GULP!

You could do rabies, OR you could do diabetes type II. I did a whole presentation with 2 other students on it. Tons of info and a major problem. You could go into metabolic syndrome and how type II is a totally preventable problem. You can also hit the cost nation wide of the problem.
