My classmates using Test Banks in Nursing school

Please note: I do NOT promote the use of any use of test banks.

This is something I've kept in the back of my head for a few years and never really had a chance to speak about it until very recently. This situation involved a group of 5-8 students in my cohort. I'll just refer to them as my classmates.

During my last year of nursing school and in the beginning of preceptorship, one of my classmates invited me to a study group for our last Med/Surg 2 rotation final. We have gone over almost everything we could cram into our heads. Prior to my departure, one classmate mentioned something called a Test Bank. At first glance, I thought it was practice questions copy/paste from Quizlet. My classmates said that they have been using it since third semester as a study guide. I declined and didn't want to bombard myself with more information. I would just look up Quizlet for any practice questions when I got back home. After the final, my classmates asked me not to say anything. I ignorantly nodded my head as my mind checked out for Spring Break or anything nursing related.

I would hear the words Test Bank again from other college students while I was prepping for Preceptorship in my nearby Starbucks. I googled it out of curiosity and discovered its controversy with all college students and staff.

I hate to say, I chose to NOT do anything. I had no proof. Preceptorship was days away and reporting this to my class advisor would be another thing I have to add on my busy plate. Initially, sought advice from this forum and seen variations of They are cheating themselves. They will not pass NCLEX. I left it at that and minded my own business.

This was over three years ago. I graduated. I passed NCLEX. I found a job. I focused on my own nursing goals. I forgot about my classmates until I recently ran into them. We did a lot of catching up and found out they all passed NCLEX (most under 100 questions) and are all happy with their jobs.

They're obviously not stupid, they passed the NCLEX first time.

You had a chance to speak with your instructors prior yet you didn't. This seems like crying over spilled milk.

Next time you want do something do it. Because nothing can or would have happen now.

Are you asking for advice?

None at all. Just a few thoughts in my head that I wanted to let out. I have met with my classmates for brunch and was happy to see everyone doing well. It just reminded me what happened during my last year in nursing school.

I chose to do nothing, because I could do nothing.

I know that test banks have been talked about all over the place so I'm sorry that this is redundant. For this semester, my teacher changed to a new book by an entirely different publisher. If I got the test bank from the old text book is that considered cheating? It's cheaper than med surg success book and it shouldn't be the same as it's a different book. Normally I would say yes it's cheating if it's the same book being used in class but since it's not I don't know.

thanks for any answers.

Why not ask your instructor that question??

I could but I'm afraid she'll think it's cheating and assume I've been cheating. I guess it's best to just not get it.

And there you have your answer.

The problem is that your instructor is not required to use test bank questions from your current book. She may use copies of tests from last year (old test book). You purchase the test bank from last year's book and score 100% because you knew all the answers. Is that still cheating? It would be the same as you getting a copy of a test from a former student.

Thanks for the reply. I assumed our teachers had to make test based on the new book.

I find that this Test Bank issue always seems to come up around exam time at my school. There are some students that are completely against them, while others happily partake. I'm one of the latter I think! I've never really had the intention of cheating when using a test bank, but instead I try to use them as supplementary study material. I find they help a lot, since the ones I've purchased always have an explanation/rationale for each answer. My goal isn't to see those same questions on the exam, and in fact I think I've only ever seen maybe 10-20% of Test Bank questions on the tests at my university. I just find they help me learn the material better.

This reminds me of my experience on my first go-around, more than 40 years ago. I distinctly remember looking at a classmate sitting a few feet away from me during a pharmacology exam. She was busily cheating. If I could see it, it might have been visible to others as well. In thinking about this now, I wondered why it never even occurred to me to rat her out. I think it was because, as naïve as I was at the time, I inwardly realized that I would be creating a problem for myself and not necessarily her. When a cheating incident came about in a prerequisite class about 20 years ago, I was just as livid as some of my classmates, when the instructor allowed the cheaters to redeem themselves. Twenty years of life caused a small shift in my attitude. Now, however, I do not see the problem with using a test bank, but only if everyone in the class has equal access and/or the instructor allows the practice.

My friend is currently in the nursing program and she bought the nursing test bank questions from a website online. She thought it was legal, but she found out that she could get kicked out of the program because of this. Her professor said that they're working with the publisher to find out who bought these test banks from an illegal website that they found. Will they be able to find out if she doesn't say and tell anyone about this?

They might.

Her best bet may be to come clean ASAP, the "I didn't know it was against the rules" defense gets weaker every day she doesn't say anything. It really depends on what this website she got the bank from was like. If it was obviously not on the up and up they probably won't buy that she thought it was just some extra resource. She can gamble that she never gets found out, but I would vote to come clean. Also, if she's just been using test banks there's a good chance she hasn't really understood then material, which could become obvious once she doesn't have access to them. Just my two cents.
