Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hello a friend told me about this website and I decided to look around. I like how everyone rally around each other and do whatever they can to help.

I need some advise. I am a nursing student struggling to make it through. I will be glad to heard some advise on how to make it. Don't get me wrong. I'm no stranger to hard work, nor do I mind doing everything possible to achieve my dream no matter how hard the task may be.

My problem seems to be that no matter how hard I study, I just can't seem to pass the test. I am in study groups and also in totouring. The thing that really frustrates me is that I can explan things to the group and get them to understand the process but then I turn around and get it wrong on the test myself. Is that not a bomber or what? Anyway I don't know what to do about it.

My husband says that I study too much. Now he has lost confidence in me and insults me to no ends. I feel like giving up. Any suggestions? Again I am not trying to get out of hard work. I understand that nursing school is hard and I look forward to the challenge. I just need to know what I can do to be successful.

Trust me this is my life long dream and something that I love to do from deep down within. I have worked in nursing homes and a few more health care settings before and I believe that I have what it takes to be a nurse.

:) :) Thanks for listening

Hello icureu,

It seems like you are really struggling with this. Have you talked with your professors about the problem testing?

I know in my nursing class, there were several students who needed to go to the learning center where it was separated from the rest of us. They just got too distracted with people getting up and moving around during the test.

I can only advise you to check out your options. Perhaps that is one way you can reduce your anxiety.

Also, you may want to examine HOW you test. Do you answer questions all the way through without coming back to those you weren't sure of? Do you change your answers, do you rush to get them answered? Things like that can tell you a lot of what you are doing and may be doing to hurt your scores.

From experience not just with nursing exams but also with the NCLEX, it is best if you calm yourself and positive talk the entire time. See what you can learn about yourself and ask those friends and professors you know you can trust for help.

Good luck and don't give up...

Maybe you are overanalyizing the questions. There are usualy more than one right answer and you must pick the best answer. Remember your ABC's. Alway pick the answer that deals with ABC first.

I know a lot of people on this board say that getting an NCLEX book (Saunder's, etc.) really helps them on tests in nursing school. I'm not there yet, so I can't tell you from personal experience. Best of luck!

Welcome Icureu,

Your friend was correct when they referred you to allnurses.com. This is a wonderful place to seek help, gain knowledge and get support through the good times as well as the bad times. There is a lot of unity here. When you are happy....we are happy with you. When you are sad.....we are here to help lift you up. I have made a lot of friends here and I hope you do to. ;)

As far as your studying, you could go and study nclex questions that relate to the area you are study. If you are studying GI, then get cd's, nclex books, and watch videos related to that area. I hope this helps!! Good luck and I wish you the best.

icu,

I also have never been that great at taking the tests. I can explain anything we are studying in great detail but when it comes to the actual test I freeze up. I have worked in L&D as a surgical tech for the past 10 years and just scored a 66% on my parent/child test last week. Talk about a butt-kicker! Just wanted to let you know you are not alone. Don't give up, I WILL NOT quit, they will have to kick me out first!

Thanks for all of the advise. I will be sure to apply it all and will let you know how Im doing. Please keep any suggestions that you may have coming.

Thanks again

Do you have really bad test taking anxiety? I would also suggest making sure you know the nursing process and always remember ABC's. I wish you the best of luck! As far as your husband goes talk to him. Tell him how you feel. Nursing school is hard enough with having him on your back.

welcome to the boards.

you got some good advice here. I wish you the best!

Thank you for the greeting!

I would suggest getting the Kaplan NCLEX book. The first 1/2 of the book talks about how to answer NCLEX style questions. It tells you how to break down the question to see what it is really asking, how to prioritize answers, etc. It doesn't have any content review, like the Saunders book does, but it is much better at explaining how to answer those "all the answers are right but which one is more right" questions on nursing tests. Good luck!

ICU,

Welcome to the Board -- it's a great place. I was a bad at taking tests until I started to go over NCLEX questions, there are two types of books one for Q&A the other is a comprehensive type -- I have both both only use the Q&A right now - bought the comprehensive type to help me for the boards (I'll be taking them sometime in Feb of next year). Secondly, I got over my hump by also learning not to just rely on my notebook -- I actually do all the readings and them some (magazine articles). I have two kids 2 (ages 15 and 4), 2 dogs and a husband that works nights and a lot of overtime. I manage my time very well and I hate procrastination althought at times I do it. Just remember the power of positive thought!! Hang in there and I wish you the best of luck
