And back in the day (1970s) we practiced EVERYTHING on each other - up to and including NGs. Gawd that was an awful day.

students are never allowed to practice on other students. in schools you will be given the theories on how to execute the procedure, then you will be practicing with dummies or mannequins, then later during your internship in hospitals or clinics, you will be exposed to the practical procedure by your clinical instructors on actual patients. The instructor will be explaining to the patient that you are an intern and the procedure will be done by the intern under the strict supervision of the instructor. At least on your part , show confidence that you are capable of doing the procedure to keep the patient at ease and trust you to do it. Show fear or reluctance in doing the procedure , the patient will never allow you to come near her.

Back in my day in the late seventies we practiced NOTHING on each other until new grad orientation and we practiced IV's on each other. All of our practice was hospital based.

When I was in a cna course, the certification was comprised of written component and skill component. For the skill component we were matched with a fellow classmate and were require to perform vitals as well as two randomly selected skills on the classmate. I had to make an occupied bed and perform passive range of motion exercise. The noght before I was up worrying that I would have to do a bed bath. And that was actually one of the possible assignments.
