congratulations! what a great gift for the holidays!
here's a few pieces of advice that i've learned from my two years of adn school:
buy your books now if you can. you can use them as expenses on your taxes. that also applies to your stethoscope (buy a good one), uniforms, shoes and anything that could be used for school.
get a study buddy once school starts. or start a study group if that's more your thing.
become friends with your teachers. most of them want to see you pass, and not just so their graduate numbers can look pretty. some of them want you to pass so that you can come back and teach once they retire. you would be amazed at how many nursing school teachers are within a few years of retiring.
tell your family, friends, significant other that you may not be seeing them as much once school starts. they'll understand.
take one day at a time, but stay focused on the big picuture: graduation, nclex and those two wonderful letters after your name.
if you fail a test, it's not the end of the world. talk to your teacher about how you can do better.
having good grades are not bad, but don't let that be your primary focus. but don't be a slacker.
you won't learn everything you need in the real world in nursing school. they are just giving you the basics. the real learning takes place outside the classroom.
nursing school is not for wimps.
have a passion for nursing, but take time out do some non-nursing things once in while: go to the movies, take a walk in the woods, play with your pet, etc.
get involved in your schoo's student nursing association. it's a great way to meet other nursing students and network.
get a job if your time alows at a local hospital as a patient care aide to help you work on your clinical skills and to see where you would like to work at after graduation.
also, get some nclex books and/or cd's to help you study. i recommend the made incredibly easy books, and the nclex 3000 or nclex 3500 cd.
hope that this helps!
adn graduate as of december 16th, 2004 10 days to go!
walk in love, walk in service and you will walk in honor.

Congradulations. I start that day too.
Thanks everyone for the advice too.
Thanks everybody for the great advice and encouragement! Right now it does seem overwhelming so taking one day at a time is good advice. Congratulations to everyone else who said they will be starting in January also. It is great to know we can all come on here to share stories and help each other out. Im sure Ill be posting lots more in the near future. Thanks again.
