I've been studying on and off for my exit HESI exam. It is a requirement as part of my last nursing course to pass with a recommended score. I'm taking it for the 1st time on April 10th.

I honestly just have two questions for all of you...

How/What did you study to pass HESI?

Is it a matter of Luck or Intelligence?

I took my "exit exam" Hesi yesterday and I passed! All I did to study was to take the Hesi practice exams from the CD that came with the Hesi study book I bought. I also did a couple of Kaplan question trainer practice tests.

It was a very hard test...different than any Hesi I have taken so far (and I have taken lots of them) There are 46 students in my graduating class and I would say that the stats were about 60% passed/40% failed.

Good Luck!!

We will be taking our 1st HESI for second semester in a few weeks.

Will a study guide for this be more helpful than my Saunders NCLEX and material from this semester?!?!

How different is it than the NCLEX-type questions?!?!?

Thx-

I didnt say the Hesi questions weren't NCLEX-type questions. I was just stating that the "Exit Exam" questions were not like any Hesi test I had taken previously. I believe my exit exam questions required more "critical thinking" than any of their other tests I have taken.

To me the other Hesi's questions required knowledge to answer them -but this test required that you take the knowledge known and critically think through them.

As far as the hesi study guide vs. the saunders I have used both of them through school. I cant say which one is of most value for overall. I can say the the Hesi book/cd helped me pass my exit hesi

I used Saunders only. got a 1052. But it is a BEAST of a test. And it is NOT about luck- good grief. If you dont have a knowledge base of just about everything you studied in school, you will not pass. Even at that there were several questions I could not answer thinking " What the heck.. did I sleep thru the lecture on that..." those were the ones I guessed on

To the OP:

Do not be intimidated by the HESI. I don't think that it was that bad, but I was well prepared.By all means study though. I worked myself into a frenzy before and during the HESI, even with the amount of review quesitons I did beforehand. I did well over 2000 questions from Saunders, and that is all I used. I made A's, B's (mostly B's), and some C's throughout nursing school. I do not think it is luck either, you really do need a good foundation and a strong knowledge base of nursing material covered since your fundamentals class. Only 3 of my classmates did not pass. I made a 999 which equals about 92-93%. Study, do your best, get a good night's sleep, and DON'T panic. You'll be just fine. Good luck

a mix of the two!

We've used it off and on for the last semester. I did HURST review the week before HESI (just happens to be how my school scheduled it).

The few days before I started reading through the HESI book concentrating on the HESI Hint boxes. I went through the CD and on Pshyc and Med Surg where there were over a hundred questions I just chose a letter and went though. That way I was only reading the question once with the rational b/c I was running out of time.

I passed with over 1100. But I test well. My classmates who passed with over 900 and actually studied- read through the book, went through the CD, and did Hesi case studies online.

I took it Thursday. I spent last night going back through the book to see if there was a specific thing to help those who didn't pass concentrate their studying. My conclusion is no- There were maybe 3-6 questions that required a concrete answer that was spelled out in a book. the Hesi Hints did guide you to look at info that you would then have to make a decision about. I was surprised at the amount that was in the "Introduction" of the Hesi book. Still no direct answers but the content was there.

I've never taken a Hesi brand test before this one. Our end of course tests are NLNs.

So I don't actually think luck has much to do with it. I can say that for my class- the ones who passed the first time were mostly the older students. So I don't know if they study harder or if they are more used to decision making.

Good Luck

We took it last week and were told not to study just to get an idea of our weaknesses and such. I got a 1074 (98.27% conversion score). I think it's more strategy than anything so if I were to focus on anything it would be one of the strategy books. I heard the Kaplan is good.

OUCH!

You may want to put emphasis on reading the Saunders HESI guide book, rather than slogging through the zillion questions on the disk. We were told the disk questions are actually "rejects" from the HESI, because the stats were bad....;)
