Found out I'm pregnant and school starts in a week!!!!

Are there some students who have recently gone through a nursing accelerated program while pregnant?

I applied for an accelerated program and was put on the waiting list in May. By mid August I did not hear back from them so I figured I did not get in the program. At he same time I found out I was 6 weeks pregnant. This was okay for me since I thought I wasn't going to school in September and I would be due in April and I figured I would apply for the program next year!! But No!! I get a call a week before classes start to say I got a spot and I'm now 9 weeks pregnant. I really don't want to decline the spot because I really want to get into the program now and get it over and done with. But now with a baby on the way and due at the end of my second semester and starting a new semester with a brand new baby. I'm not sure how I can do this. Has anyone else been in this position and made it work? I really don't want to be discouraged in thinking it can't be done because I'm sure it can but I know it will be Beyond tough.

Any input put will be great!!!

Having had 3 babies and having completed one year of nursing school (all my babies are school age), I would defer. I can't see having a 6 hour clinical, then coming home to write a 20 page careplan all while nursing a newborn. I think nursing school can wait a bit.

Plus (and not to be a Debbie Downer- just speaking from experience) you are not guaranteed an uneventful, 40 week pregnancy, speedy labor and uncomplicated delivery, rapid recovery and healthy baby. Any number of monkey wrenches could get thrown in.

If you're guaranteed a spot next year- I would take it.

I have not personaly been in this situation but I am in a few groups about nursing and have seen this posted. One thing that pops up the most is do you have support? Is the father in the picture and is he willing to take a lot of responsibility while you are doing school stuff. Your situation is far from impossible it's just harder then some. If you really want this then you can do. I would just make sure you have a good support system that will understand the help you will need. Good luck.

I can't speak to being pregnant in nursing school (or even having kids) but if you decide to accept the spot your school has offered you need to be honest and upfront about your situation before you start. There are a lot of experiences that you as a pregnant student will not be able to participate in, and your instructors/administrators need to know to keep you safe from potential harm.

I was pregnant and had my first baby in between semesters of nursing school. Myprogram was year round, and my baby was born at the end of that May after my first two semesters. They split our class into two clinical groups, so some had clinical in the first half of th semester and some in the second half. I requested to have clinical in the first half so I wouldn't be showing as much. My support was good. My husband worked full time to support us, and though times were tight financially, we managed to make it work. 6 weeks after he was born, I headed back to start my summer term and clinicals. It helped that my husband worked late second shift so he was home with the baby during the day when I was gone. I was lucky to have an uncomplicated pregnancy and fast delivery with a healthy baby.

It can work, it's a lot of work, but doable.

Been there, done that. I found out I was pregnant after I applied to nursing school. Started nursing school at about 6.5 months. I had tons of support though. We moved in with my parents. I had both parents, an aunt, a husband, my brother and my 3 year old son for help. It was hard but it can be done, with a 3.1 GPA. I worked full time also. . Sometimes you may have to choose between a shower or sleep. Just being honest. It was hard. But it can be done.

One of my good friends found out she was pregnant around the first week of nursing school. It was tough, but she did it and just graduated! She had her baby between semesters and had about 4 weeks off before having to return for the next semester. She does have a good amount of family nearby and I am sure they really helped make it possible. She said she would just be nursing her baby and studying constantly. She would find weird times to get the studying in because she was determined to make it happen. If you want it bad enough, you will find a way to make it work! Congratualtions on your pregnancy and nursing school! What an exciting time. You've got this!!

I had a classmate who had a baby during a break between semesters. It was hard on her but she was able to do it. Like others have mentioned, I think it depends on how much support you have and how much you think you can handle.

I had a couple of classmates who were pregnant through LPN school, so I doubt this will be helpful. One had her baby during the summer. Another's water broke in the middle of our fundamentals test. She wanted to finish the test, but she was advised to leave. The only downside is that she had to retake the test after taking the final.
