First Fundamentals Test ???

Hi, I am in my first year, actually first month of nursing school and we have a test coming up next week. It is our first one in Nursing Fundamentals so I have no idea what things to focus on. I'm pretty sure they will be NCLEX type questions but I'm not sure what content I should focus on. Our reading consisted of the Nursing Process, Spirituality, Culture, Sensory Perception, Health Assessment and Vital Signs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

I am in my 6th week of practical nursing and I have to say that I find this subject to be the hardest because its all critical thinking and not just black and white answers. Our test are based on NCLEX so there are normally two answers that could be right, but you have to pick the BEST one. I dont have questions straight from the test but here are a few examples. Sorry they are lengthy.
1. For a pt. in the acute care facility, the nurse identifies several interventions. The statement that best communicates the activity of the nurse is: A) assist with ROM exercises, B) take the pts. vital signs, C) refer the pt. to physical therapist, D) provide 30ml of water with the nasogastric tube feedings q4h. ANSWER=D
2. In determining one of the following pts. on the medical unit to visit first, the nurse selects the pt. with which one of the following diagnoses? A) imbalanced nutrition: less than body requirements, B) ineffective tissue perfussion, C) deficient knowledge regarding home care resources, D) impaired physical mobility ANSWER=B

I hope that this helps. GOOD LUCK!!!

I personally BOMBED my first fundamentals exam because I didn't understand how to study for it. For a fundamentals exam, you really need to understand the concepts and rationale behind the subject matter you are studying. So for me, I went through the topics that were stressed and class and studied the rationale. I would also pose questions to myself concerning the abnormals and what is most imperative for a nurse. You should also know nursing interventions.

Does your professor give you any inclination as to what is going to be on the exam? Thankfully our professor gave us the areas we should focus on.

I just had my first Fundamentals exam today. Our lectures were over Ethics, Legal Responsibilities, Cultural Competence, Nursing Theories and our labs have consisted of Vital Signs, Safety, Infection Control and Assessment.

Most of the questions center on scope of practice (promoting wellness, restoring health, etc.), Ethics and Cultural Competence.

A few of the questions were pretty straightforward, right or wrong answers. But many, many of them have at least two answers that are reasonable. Our instructors have "learning outcomes" on our printouts for every lecture. They told us that if we are comfortable with those outcomes, we should do fine on the test. For example, one outcome was about ethical decision making model. So, I looked over those notes and read that part of the chapter in my textbook. I did this for all of the lectures.

The test was over 11 chapters in our book, but I focused on my notes and those learning outcomes. I made a 94 on the test. Other students I spoke to after the test studied and tried to "memorize" all the theories and terms and forgot about the learning outcomes. Many of them did not do as well.

Look over your lecture handouts and your syllabus for clues to what your instructors are trying to teach. Focus on the learning outcomes or objectives and you should do just fine!

Good Luck! It is a huge relief to have that first test under your belt. Try not to be too anxious (yeah, right!) and THINK about ALL the choices before choosing your final answer!

Let us know how you do!

I am in Fundamentals too. I used my powerpoints to study. I read the chapters first, then really concentrated on the powerpoints. goodluck!! It is a lot of critical thinking and picking the "right" best answer!!

There is a book called "Fundamentals Success." Run (don't walk) to your nearest bookstore or library and get this book. It is a book of questions only with rationales that is broken down into fundamental topics (ethics, health assessment, etc). It will really help you figure out how to study. Good luck!

THANKS so much for everyone's advice. We don't get powerpoints but I have been focusing on the objectives on the syllabus so hopefully I will do okay. I have also heard from other students that there are usually two very reasonable answers and it's up to you to pick the correct one. Our test is Monday so I'm going to take everyone's advice and hope it goes well!!

Thanks again!!
