Favorite Care Plan Book?

Love this book! I picked this up because I wasn't happy with the one we were required to purchase. I went to my local Barnes and Noble, sat on the floor and paged through stacks of books until I found I liked this one best. It made my last two semesters of care plans so much easier.

I'll second that recommendation from the previous poster. We were required to purchase a terrible book by Carpenito(sp?) and my CI recommended that other care plan book. I went to my local book store and bought it that night, it made things much easier.

They made us buy not one but TWO different Carpenito care planning books and they are both terrible!

I use that one too. Great resource. It has the patho for a lot of diseases and conditions and everything you need to write a care plan.

i have a whole orificenal of care plan and nursing diagnosis books over here at my home. there is one that i like, in particular. nursing diagnosis handbook: a guide to planning care, 7th edition, by betty j. ackley and gail b. ladwig. the reason is because it has an index in the front that cross-references a whole bunch of medical diagnoses, medical conditions and symptoms with possible nursing diagnoses. the remainder of the book is an expansion of each of the nanda nursing diagnoses plus one or two that the authors threw in on their own. this is more of a reference book of nursing diagnosis though. it's not going to help you a whole lot to see how to put together the entire picture for someone who has, let's say, pneumonia.

for that, you need a care plan book. now, i happen to have an older edition of carpenito's care plan book from 1997 and i like it very much. in fact, i read her explanations on care planning and the nursing process in this book occasionally to refresh myself on the process because i think she does such a great job of explaining it. however, for students i have come to think that nursing care plans: nursing diagnosis and intervention, 6th edition, by meg gulanick and judith l. myers is a pretty good care plan book to have. it's a two-in-one deal. it has both care plans for a whole bunch of medical conditions as well as the same kind of individual nursing diagnosis listings as the ackley/ladwig book has. it's written for students in language that i think students can understand. i don't hear too many students talk about this book on the forums, but i can tell you that some of the students who i have e-mailed with have had this as a recommended care plan book by their instructors.

I use Ackley and love it. I find it more user-friendly than others I have picked up.

I purchased Nursint Care Plans ed 6 by Marilynn Doenges for $14.49 at Hastings. It comes with CD that you can customize for your patients. I start orientation next week, but I went on a spree this summer and bought some books on clearance that I thought might help down the road.

Another vote for the Ackley and Ladwig book. I have several hand-me-downs from nurses, and I go back to the A & L book every time!

That's the one I use. It's helped me get an A one every care plan I've written.
