Another book question from me!

There are a bunch of books out there... do a search here and you will find several threads going over the benefits of each of them!

Personally, I went with whatever the school said to get... then went to the bookstore and looked at some others. I ended up buying a different one too, just so I would have more information.

A friend of mine gave me her careplan books (she just graduated) and I use them a lot for interventions and rationales!! I know what I want to do in my care plans - but the books help me to word them and come up with complete rationales!! Barnes & Noble and Borders books carry care plan books and will let you browse them thoroughly before purchasing! (I even have a couple classmates who sit in the store and write out their care plans).

As far as drug cards...I use Davis too and last semester I just used the CD that came with the book and printed out the info for the drugs my patient was on...this semester we weren't require to give as much info so I wrote out 3X5 cards with the info I needed.

I own Nursing Care Plans and Documentation by Lynda Carpenito. The publisher is Lippincott. It is a very nice book and I know other students at school who have it and like it. It was $42.95 at Borders.

I think doing care plans is a great way to learn but I think the instructors take it way too seriously! :uhoh3:

I have Carpenito and never use it. My hospital has wonderful careplans all written out (so I just borrow them ).

I've got the "Nursing Diagnosis Handbook: A guide to planning care" by Ackley and Ladwig.

It's good- lays it all out nice and simple-like. Uses NANDA, NIC and NOC and provides tons of interventions along with the scientific rationale. Pretty colours on the cover too!

I've heard of Carpentio- a friend gave me her sister's old (old as in '97!) "handbook of nursing diagnosis" but I really haven't looked at it. I already had the Ackley book by then.

I think doing care plans is a great way to learn but I think the instructors take it way too seriously!

I TOTALLY AGREE! On the ward, I've never actually seen a nurse make a careplan! I asked about it once, and the nurse said as long as something's written by d/c, it's all good! So THERE instructors!

I also have the Ackley/Ladwig Nursing Diagnosis Handbook. It's o.k., but I love the new one I got. It's Mosby's Nursing Care Plans, 4th ed. by Gulanick, Klopp,Galanes,Gradishar, and Puzas. I think it's great. I use it all the time.

Another book some of you might want to consider, that our professors showed us this semester and made optional to order, is Diseases and Disorders, A Nursing Therapeutics Manual. THe ISBN is 0-8036-0811-x. It has medical diagnoses with a short description of the disease, and then goes through the whole nursing process from assessment tips to possible diagnoses to outcomes you would consider for a patient with that medical diagnosis. I have found it extremely helpful when I get my patient assignments to look up their medical diagnosis and then kind of plan my assessment accordingly. The other people in my class have found it quite helpful as well. The book was $40 new but you could probably find it used or in an older edition for cheaper. Hope this helps!!

The Ladwig/Ackley is my favorite. I have around four different ones and it beats them all. Try finding one on Half.com or Allbookstores.com and you can save some money also!
