When someone 'superior' says "DUH!" to you

  1. We have one MD who practices intellectual snobbery, and he has a small cult of RNs who try to parrot him and stroke his already huge ego.
These nurses also act holier-than-thou and speak as though they too are superior to all in our ICU.
Lately, if any of us lowly neanderthal brain nurses makes a comment or gives an opinion, on just about anything, this Dr. and/or these RNs, say something back, for example, "I've known that and have been telling you that same thing for years. DUH!!!!" or, "That is not what the research shows. DUH!!!!" Followed by their hysterical laughter at you, in front of a group.

Does anyone have a good comeback for these self-sanctimonious jerks? These people are not even very good at patient care, but they are some mean barracudas with sharp teeth and barbed tongues. Not that I want to lower myself to their levels...OK, maybe I do just for a minute, to shut them up!

How about (in a smart a$$ tone), "Oh, excuse me, I forgot, you're PERFECT!"
Or, "Yes, but you don't have any manners!" LOL!

LOL! I hate people like that! Don't let them get away with it.

I think you should bring in a little tape recorder and when the idiot MD and his harem start being rude push the play button. Play it back for them, maybe even over the intercom, or turn the tape into the suits. We have an abusive physician form where I work. Not that they do anything about the abusive docs that make money for the place. Maybe when they hear how stupid they sound, nah, they are too simple minded to change. Just tape them and keep track of it. Tell them you'd prefer to be addressed in a professional manner.

You could also use one of the sarcastic remarks. It's on a thread here somewhere. I know one of the responses was "I see you have set aside this special time to make a complete fool of yourself."

I think I would say in my sutle b_ _ chy way.....
"oh it sounds like somone has been eating razor soup today"
It'll take them a few hours to realize that you were being a bi_ch.
Then they will have to figure out that "razor soup" means someone has a very sharp tongue. Try it, it works.

unfortunately being the passionate and emotion filled young woman that I am I would have to make a snide comment and not just sit there and let them shove their superiority down my throat.
in this case probably something along the lines of
"oh well the general public is so lucky to have you here"
"well I guess I should just go back to standing around with one finger up my a$$ and the other up my nose, since you all seem to have things covered here"
"I've already sent my nomniations to the nobel peace committe on your behalf, the medal should be in the mail soon"
"research shows that people who have to put others down and show intellecutal superiority over them have really bad sexual ability, least I know which category I fit into *wink*"
"you should do research on how to annoy people with your seemingly endless witty banter, I can be your first research subject"
"Wow I guess I should put this copy of Playgirl/guns and ammo/cosmo down and start reading some of your medical journals so I can catch up" - with a laugh on the end of it like HUH HUH HUH type of thing
if however you want to be the better party and person in general here I would suggest subjecting yourself to these ppl as little as possible
and when you do, continue to offer your opinion as you wish but dont show any sign of a reaction once those whineyheads start chirping in on how wrong you are.
its called an opinion, we are all entitled to have them, you dont like mine then dont join my fanclub
    end of story

Sorry, but sometimes folks like these need a little return of their own medicine before they realize the "jokes" aren't appreciated. A few of my favorites:

"I see SOMEONE had an extra bowl of bi*** flakes this morning."

"I've heard many put own a super ego act to make up for a 'shortage' elsewhere. Guess I know more about your anatomy than I ever wanted to know." (Particularly effective with males.)

"So, you need to stroke your ego by trying to make others feel small. How incredibly sad."

"Time to up your thorazine dose."

"Hmmmm. 3 million sperm in each ejaculation, and you are the best your daddy could come up with?"

And for the nurses who love to suck up:

"You know the difference between a brown nose and a sh**head? Depth perception. Time to get your glasses checked."

"I know you are really fond of Dr XXX, but be careful. If he makes any sudden turns, you're bound to break your nose. And I don't even want to thing about the nightmare you will have with your hairstyle if he stops suddenly."

"I heard Dr XXX is having a glassoplasty. You know, a pane of glass implanted in his stomach so you can see where he is going."

OK, on reflection, there is one other thing to try. But this is serious, and must be said in a serious, calm, professional manner.

"I am very tired of you behaving like an adolescent. I am also very tired of your constant attempts to make yourself feel superior by putting me down with your 'duh!' comment. It is insulting and belittling. If you mean it as a 'joke,' rest assured that I do not take it that way. I am asking you nicely this one time that you stop treating me in this manner. If this happens again, you can expect that I will write you up, and I will follow up to ensure that the appropriate management level becomes involved. Am I making myself very clear?"

Stick to your guns, and follow through on the actions you say you will take. These people are trying to feel better about themselves by insulting you. Don't put up with it.

If this doesn't work, use my tag line on them, and end with "right now, I see you as the problem."
