I am a new grad from cali and went looking for a job in RTP (Raleigh) area, i talked to HR rep and was told that starting salary is 18.50 at UNC chapell hill. Is that the norm in NC? If not what is normal salary after 1-2years experience? Just re-considering my move from Bay area...where starting is 40-45hr.

I don't know what the starting salary is in NC since I'm just beginning school, but, I do know that the cost of living in NC, is much less than in the Bay area. I live in Greensboro, and you can buy a brand new 3 bedroom home, in a very nice neighborhood, for 100k or less. If you don't mind making a 15 minute drive, the cost is less than that.

Not a lot of Aussies replying here!

Until Bloody John Howard got his hands on the workplace laws, many fields paid their employees under Awards, which set out standard conditions and rates of pay. The Nurses (State) Award for NSW is valid until July 2008, so it still stands.

Here is a link to the Award for NSW:

Just pick Nurse, Registered. It's a long pdf document but on about page 76, it has the full rates of pay. A new grad RN starts at about $22 per hour here and we go up each year for the first 8 years of practice. A higher grading leads to higher pay.

I think the idea of an award is smart - no one has ever told me not to discuss my pay rate with my colleagues, because it's all available freely on line, and we all are paid at a rate based on our education and experience. No differences for being in busy, central Sydney or rural, quiet Orange. Obviously there are different costs of living between city and country towns, but it's all fair, I think. ETA - we're all underpaid, but at least we are all underpaid at the same rate!

I'm just coming off my 3 nights in a row, have had 5 hrs of sleep and have been packing all day in preparation for a big move.... with all that, I'm figuring I'm way beat because I don't have a friggin' clue what the point of this was!!! I came on to check for more funny stuff like the ever present "sheesh" and I got this?!? Anyway.... Bring on the funny stuff... spare me the corny crap.

And then a scholar said, Speak of Talking. And he answered, saying; You talk when you cease to be at peace with your thoughts;

And when you can no longer dwell in the solitude of your heart you live in your lips, and sound is a diversion and a pastime.

And in much of your talking, thinking is half murdered.

For thought is a bird of space, that in a cage of words may indeed unfold its wings but cannot fly.

There are those among you who seek the talkative through fear of being alone. The silence of aloneness reveals totheir eyes their naked selves and they would escape.

And there are those who talk, and without knowledge or forethought reveal a truth which they themselves do not understand. And there are those who have the truth within them, but they tell it not in words.

In the bosom of such as these the spirit dwells in rhythmic silence.

When you meet your friend on the roadside or in the market place, let the spirit in you move your lips and direct your tongue.

Let the voice within your voice speak to the ear of his ear;

For his soul will keep the truth of your heart as the taste of the wine is remembered when the colour is forgotten and the vessel is no more.

LOL...Thank you WhimsieRN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey PunkinJones... retire why don't you? I can see the Nurse Mate clog hanging from the side of your mouth! Quit eating your young!!!!!! We're coming, we're many and we're mighty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As you can guess, I re-read your mess and I'm not fazed. Rather, I'm tickled pink at the thought that not too far down the road for you, a fellow newbie will be inserting your catheter...and hopefully, missing and re-inserting it seeing as she can't put one in and all!

What exactly has threatened you? The fact that we're well-educated and young? The fact that we're starting at payrates it took you decades to get to? Too many of us can easily have your position? Is that it? Don't be mad. Roll off me..... we're not in the same league. The post was about salary. Get back to it.

SHEESH!

OH MY...... Did we forget to take our medication this morning?

However, a true nurse (at heart) does not enter this field of work for the money.

I'm a recently graduated RN; nursing is my second career. I was a sucessfull businessman for twenty something years, and I am taking a substantial cut in pay as a nurse. I don't believe one's motivation makes them less "true" a nurse. However, if anyone feels the need to be a "truer" nurse, please feel free to forward your paycheck to me!

Lively and intelligent debate is always welcome. Attacking someone on a personal or professional level is not and never will be. Disagree all you want so long as you keep your focus on concepts and behavior choices (rather than the people themselves) and your communication remains civil. Tearing others down does nothing to elevate the perpetrator. It only reveals them to be lacking in character and restraint.

After consderable review, the moderators have decided that this thread will remain closed. We will leave it viewable for two reasons.

It might be a good resource for those seeking pay information across the country.

And, sadly, it can also serve as an object lesson on how a perfectly sensible request can deteriorate into a mud-slinging free-for-all.
