  1. As a business owner who hires nurses, I hate it when a nurse leaves with giving 30 day's notice. I wish we could attach a note to their license! That said, here is my free advice: A business does not want to seem like they are trying to financially damage an ex-employer. Juries do not like it when large companies hurt the little guy. I suggest you talk to the people who were successful in regaining their access. Did they hire an attorney? (Get a name) What was the argument they used that caused the change? Did it go to trial? Going to the same attorney, you can ask them to write a letter asking for the desired results. A letter from an attorney carries a lot of weight and will only cost some hundreds of dollars instead of thousands. Good luck!

  3. While you have the right to, you do not have the ability to defend yourself without an attorney. $4,000 can seem like a ton of money, and it is, but a good attorney is worth every penny. You can make that money up quickly by working a few doubles, or running a shot clinic. Go hire an attorney and make sure he is a bulldog. Speaking from experience.
  4. I'm a new grad, working in my first RN position. I have been asked to sit in a committee to discuss formation of a "Clinical Ladder" which will serve as the framework for a system of bonuses in our hospital. While experienced in business, I was not familiar with Clinical Ladders. Discussions about them seem to bring out very emotional reactions. Could I ask you all to pitch in your "two cents" and give me your impressions, feelings, etc. so I can draw on your collective wisdom? What is your experience with them? Potential problems/pitfalls to avoid? Opinions of strengths and weaknesses? Thanks much! Brian
  5. I just did what you will be doing last summer. WA student, knew I would be working in OR. If you KNOW that you will be working in OR, there is no benefit to taking the NCLEX in WA, and some disadvantages. The obvious benefit is expense. Why pay to license in two states if you don't need to? The other is less obvious: in OR, and unlike WA, you can register for the NCLEX prior to graduation by having your school file an anticipated graduation form. Since June/July/Aug are heavy NCLEX months, early registration can save you several weeks of waiting. Transferring a new WA RN license to OR takes some time, and you can't work in OR until the process is complete. On the other hand, if you think you may be working in WA in the near future, you can avoid having to retake additional HIV/AIDS coursework if you license in WA first, and then transfer your license to OR. Best of luck, and congrats in advance!

I'm loving working at Pediatric orthopedics. Brian
  7. If someone accesses your credit history, the inquiry shows up on your credit report. If you want to find out if they checked your credit, pull a copy of your own credit report.

  9. If you took it through Pearson, I think you can. Log in and check on your current activity, and if the info is available it will give you the option of paying $7.95 to find out your unofficial results. $7.95 for several nights of good sleep w/o worries = a good deal! Best of luck! Brian
  10. I know Clark in Vancouver does a lot of LPN to RN's, for when the time comes.
  11. I just found out I passed the NCLEX! I'm an RN! Another male nurse in the forum! Now, for the job search ... - Brian "Blueskies"
  12. FYI, This thread is also linked from the Allnurses main page, so not all readers will know that it originated from a L&D forum. My experience in L&D was 11 weeks in clinicals, but I was very accepted by patients in the L&D side, and not so much in the post-delivery side. I think the nurses were more uncomfortable with the idea than the patients were. My school must be different than that of some of the other posters -- as guys, we had to do everything the gals did, unless the patient objected. I believe everyone -guy or gal- should be able to have a witness present to protect themselves legally.
  13. I've got to admit I was shocked when I read that someone felt that guys are slackers and not carrying their weight. I suppose it happens, but I have never seen it. On the contrary, I am often asked to assist with moving any heavyweight on the floor. The time and effort I may ask for from my fellow female nurses in order to protect myself legally pales in comparison to the time and effort I give helping. Its all good and it all evens out in the end.
  14. Was the original question concern over whether guys are predatory, or whether we pull our weight?
  15. I'm a recently graduated RN; nursing is my second career. I was a sucessfull businessman for twenty something years, and I am taking a substantial cut in pay as a nurse. I don't believe one's motivation makes them less "true" a nurse. However, if anyone feels the need to be a "truer" nurse, please feel free to forward your paycheck to me!
