  1. Hi there, I really enjoy reading all the posts on this forum it is great. I guess it is my turn to ask for some advice. I work in hospice as an rn for a small 8 bed residence..wonderful job. I am going to be 50 and have been nursing for almost 15 years. I had an ACDF (anterior cervical fusion) on January 28th. I am on FMLA. I was planning on being off about 6 weeks..The surgery went pretty good. I did however have a major complication. Somehow there was damage to my nerve going to the larynx and now I have a paralyzed right sided vocal cord. I am able to talk. My voice however is very breathy and it takes effort some days to really talk. I am not able to project my voice and hard to talk in a room with alot of noise either background or foreground noise. At this point it is almost 5 weeks they don't know if or when my real voice will come back. I am going to voice therapy next week. I am worried about my work. I can go back with no restrictions in a couple of weeks for the fusion part of my neck. But when I talked to my supervisor, they told me to call back in a few weeks after I got my voice therapy evaluation and then the big boss and supervisor and myself would talk...Remember this is a very small organization. At this point I will be either at 6 or 7 weeks of FMLA.. That does leave me with another 6 weeks to work with before they can replace me. What sucks is I have no short term disability... Long story short...........what are options that I have to work as a nurse. I have done 10 years of er and now the hospice..?? It is scary to think that at age 50 I am going to have to make some major changes.. this is not a pity party. I am just frustrated.....any advice please! Thank you very much.
  2. Hi there. I know that this has been mentioned before but to find a current thread I have had a hard time with trying to find a specific answer to my question. So here I go I realize that credit check (be it good or bad) is part of todays application process..So my question? Besides looking for your finacial history, can a work history be found with a credit check?? What else can they tell by you.. No I have not done anything bad or illegal. I do have a not so clean credit history..I did however not disclose every single nursing job that I have had over the last couple of years. It has been a bad two years for me. I have not had the best job history in the last couple of years due to things beyond my control..But now I am ready and able to work. I applied last week for a home health job and was supposed to have heard back by the middle of this week and have not heard anything and yes I did give them permission for a credit check. They told me they were not go to really use it cause of my position???? I am sure they did and now I am concerned... Any input here would be great..Thanks
  3. Lori, I am new but I wanted to say I have been in your shoes to many times to count. I wish there was something that I could say to make it better, but there isn't. Just stay strong and don't offer anymore information than they ask for and try to stand up for yourself. You are a good person and a good nurse. Why do us nurses who are good get treated this way... Good luck tomorrow..I will be thinking of you...
  4. Hi there. Love the site and couldn't wait to be able to post here. Well, I want to keep this short if I can but.. I have been a nurse for 13 years. I worked in an ED level one trauma for 10 years. Got burned out, stressed out. It was a very difficult time with a divorce and all.Because of all the issues at the time, I requested an FMLA. The first request was denied. I was then called into the office and was asked to resign. The reason this was because of attendence to patient care. I would like to state I am also a Certified Sexual Assualt Nurse Examiner. I was very involved with the department from Hazmat, to sexual assualt, charge...I worked for the last 1o years with no "office calls". Also to note there was a manager at that time on a witch hunt. I was the hunted. (Funny however just last year she was asked to step down from the manager position due to staff concerns.} If I was such a bad nurse for all those years why didn't I get fired before. Remember the FMLA, well the day after I resigned it was approved with apologies for a mistake that HR had made. I have never gone back. This was the beginning of the end. For the next 2 years I have been let go for "not a good fit", "skills don't seem up to par"., "Need to pick up speed".... I have never been fired for bad patient care. I have gone thru maybe 6 employers in the last 2 years. I tried many areas during that time from Dialysis to cardiology office, ED. So needless to say what is up with my skills?? Do nurses lose there sharpness over years, is nursing geared to the younger ones? I moved back to my home area and tried to get work only to be blackballed by both the hospitals in the area. I was stated as rehirable.. I started working in a small ED a few months ago and also did some infusion nursing along with that. The staff in the infusion center were awesome and I don't have any problems.. I filled in after a week when a co-worker was out for bearevement. I started the ED portion of orientation with no problems. A few weeks into it, my daughters best friend died at age 26, I was diagnosed with heart failure (not sure where that came from). So I made it back to work and from that point on I had two "office meetings" the first was just a fyi about personal stuff and to much interaction with staff. Changed preceptor this one was older I thought I did well she stated I did. Then went to night shift preceptor was very young and I was watched like a hawk..She has been a nurse for 2 years. Got called in the office last week for concerns that I am not as up to par for someone with all this experience and maybe I should not work in the Ed and just stay with the infusion center..THAT SUCKED. So here I am playing on the computer, only working about 20hours a week..I am sick and I don't know what to do. I cry all the time.. Somehelp give me advice as what to do next... There is a posting for a full time days med-surg I have never done it before. But the manager is also the manager for the ED... I need a full-time job. I may have to relocate to get a differnt job. I don't like this situation.. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Sorry it was long. I guess I needed to write this..
