What happened to Nurses Week?

My homehealth agency did absolutely NOTHING for the actual nurses who take care of the clients day-in. I'm told there was a luncheon/ gifts for the STNA/HHA during a scheduled mandatory skills exam and cards for the DON and RN sups. But not even a "Happy Nurses Week" for the rest of us. Not to sound petty- but I am slightly offended. Nothing like being appreciated by the company you bust your butt for....

I don't care about whats on the silver platter, I'll just take the silver platter!

But anyways, back at the homecare ranch, we had a nice lunch provided to us by the owner, and a free tank of gas no matter the cost, and a free car wash. Not bad indead!

We did actually try to celebrate every day on it's own but the truth is, people did complain about the perceived differences in celebration between the CNA appreciation and RN appreciation, to name just two. It was a never-ending battle - soul wearying at the least to try to be everything to everybody.

So we put on a barbeque for the entire hospital - with tri-tip mind you, not hot dogs! Then later in the week we serve cake and punch to all the hospital employees.

Seems to work well.

I'm not big on "Hallmark" holidays . . . . so this isn't a big deal to me. Treat me with respect every day of the week and appreciate the role I play and that is all I ask.

please let say "thank you" to all the hardworking, shortstaffed, underappreciated nurses, esp Chinese nurses.

I work at a Mayo Health System clinic. They had a breakfast on Wednesday for the nurses. It was from 7:30am-8:30am (we have to clock in to get ready to see pt. at 8:00am). There was nothing else the rest of the week for the nurses. The breakfast was mainly something you could take to your desk and eat. Muffins, fruit, juice, etc. Then on Friday they had a big to-do about Service Excellence and had snacks, drawings for prizes, etc. and are having a big luncheon next week for it. Some of the nurses received flowers, coffee cups, and little appreciation tokens from their pts. but nothing from the clinic. You would think that Mayo would be able to afford a coffee mug or something for it's nurses.

Our "reception" turned out to bed cake and punch. We got a t-shirt and a change purse (left overs from last year). There was a drawing for door prizes, too. One of the doc's gave us a cheesecake. All of this was on Monday. On Tuesday, we started the Hospital Week celebration with a pancake breakfast. I was off, so I'm not sure what else was planned.

Our DON really went out of her way to show her appreciation for our hard work. She planned a cook out, and we had a lunch catered for us--too bad night shifters couldn't be there due to working all night long. She also gave every one of us a gift basket. I was impressed with all of it. HAPPY NURSES DAY, all you wonderful caring nurses out there!!

I was very impress with how our hospital treated the night shift and weekenders this year. FRESH catered meals were delived to the floors, AND float nurses took turns giving the NS a full 30 minute lunch where they had HOT food they had time to CHEW and TASTE.

I am so mad I could spit!!! At the hospital where I work, this week which is "Nurse's Week", is called "National Hospital Week" & we no longer acknowledge nurses week, because it upset the other departments, they said that the nurses were being "spoiled" & favored, & that it just wasnt fair. Meanwhile, when it is "Dietary, Health Information, Lab, X-Ray", or any other damn week, we have signs posted all over the place! Am I the only one who feels that this is absolute crap???:angryfire

As far as I am concerned, this is just another attempt to minimize, and conceal the contributions and accomplishments, of nursing before the public. How better to accomplish this than create another holiday/professional recognition day, that pushes nursing out of the limelight. And of course, hospitals have far greater resources to push "THEIR", professsional recognition day in front of the public, than nursing does. This is another delibertate attempt to make nursing "invisible". Nurses should demand that hospitals change the timing of "their" (hospitals) day, to one that is not the same or right before or after, National Nurses Week. This is a conflict of interests. JMHO.

How better to accomplish this than create another holiday/professional recognition day, that pushes nursing out of the limelight. And of course, hospitals have far greater resources to push "THEIR", professsional recognition day in front of the public, than nursing does. This is another delibertate attempt to make nursing "invisible". Nurses should demand that hospitals change the timing of "their" (hospitals) day, to one that is not the same or right before or after, National Nurses Week. This is a conflict of interests. JMHO.

So much for that crazy 'teamwork' idea. Next time, i'll just go into work, stomp up and down and pound my fists on the desk until i'm respected. Since my attitude and behavior otherwise have nothing to do with whether i'm respected or not, concealed or not. :rolleyes:
