Vegan parents arrested - page 2

Would someone please explain this to me? I don't really have a full grasp of what a 'vegan' is...I think it's the most restrictive vegetarian, but then, this couple wouldn't let their kid have... Read More

Being a vegan is one thing...
Starving your baby to the point of malnutrition, fractures, rickets, distended abdomen, and developmental delay is another...
And the part about the dad being worried b/c she started to look "chubby" after she was taken away and fed real food...

    Loved this quote:
The Swintons...say they approach veganism as a religion
What the heck does that mean? They pray to squash? They worship legumes? They deify tofu?

Potatoe chips would be vegan food because pototes are not an animal and they are not animal byproducts.

But they are full of cholesterol, and cholesterol is an animal byproduct. Made by the liver if I remember those nutrition lectures correctly.

    Hmmm.

I think the cholesterol content comes from the oils they fry the potatoes in - as potatoes themselves don't have cholesterol.

But then they must be animal fats and oils that they are fried in. Cholesterol is not present in vegetables or vegetable oils.

Almost everything has SOME animal product in it, even if you don't see it. You have to really look at the labels.

And I agree with Heather. Those people are not right, and the fact that the dad was concerned that she was getting chubby when she was fed normally, tells me that his problem is NOT with veganism, but with some strange body-image thing.

The story may be wrong, but it says they gave the baby cod-liver oil. Well, that's obviously not vegan, but isn't it sometimes a laxative as well? An appropriate diet for a baby can come from soy formulas, as mentioned before!!!!

I think that veganism is getting alot of undue attention here. While I think it's not right for a growing, developing child, I'll put it aside for now.

In my opinion, the whole thing stinks of eating disorders. By standardized growth charts, the child was still below average after becoming somewhat nourished, yet the father saw her as "chubby"? And the whole laxative/cod liver oil use disturbs me. I'd be interested in the height/weight proportions of these parents.

Was the baby premature? I can't remember. If she was, I wonder how much it had to do with her mom's poor eating habits.
