Would someone please explain this to me? I don't really have a full grasp of what a 'vegan' is...I think it's the most restrictive vegetarian, but then, this couple wouldn't let their kid have breast milk? Why not? Link to the article:

Here's an update from someone who has met Ice and her nutty family. She was placed with a wonderful foster family. Within two weeks of admission to the rehab hospital she was sitting up and eating like a horse. This is why I love peds; kids are just so resilient.

Holy crap. You MET them? You TOOK CARE OF the baby? Sorry, thought this just HAD to be highlighted...

Man, so, like, are they real freaks or do they seem normal? Poor kid. Glad she's doing better. :)

Yes I met them, I fought with them on the phone, they are pretty crazy. However, they truly did not think they did anything wrong. Very very sad; the child will have extensive developmental problems, although like I said, she made a lot of progress in a very short time.

Obviously God made our bodies to REQUIRE certain things that can only be obtained via animals. Do these people think they know more than God? The few vegans I have met just wanted to set themselves apart somehow. So immature.

Sheesh, what ever happened to feeding a baby good ole Gerber fruits and veggies?? Did this people not grocery shop...especially since they make even "healthier" organic baby foods too...why feed a baby ground nuts?? :( I really wish they wouldn't have been labeled as Vegans...They are really just loony child abusers. :o

Just wondering...Aren't soy products ok for Vegans? They make just about everything you could want to eat in soy...

Yep, I'm vegan and I eat lots of soy products. I plan on breastfeeding when the time comes, too. You're right, those people should not have been labeled as vegans--it did vegans everywhere a great disservice. Those people were crazy and abusive, period.

I don't know about purplemania, but my body actually DOESN'T require anything that can only be obtained via animals. Somehow, I've been living just fine as a vegan, working, going to school, even running a few marathons! Does this make me immature and trying to "set myself apart somehow"? I don't think so. That was really uncalled for.

This is truly truly sad. It's quite obvious that these two people have severe psychiatric issues. I hope they get the help they need.

I also hope they never reproduce anything ever again. Yeah, I'll say it - FORCED NEUTERING! YEAH!

Can't you hear Bob Barker saying it? "Save the idiot population. Spay and neuter your idiots.. Goodnight!"

Okay, I'm being bad. Buh-bye.

A vegan is a strict vegetarian, for varying reasons, but ussually because of moral feelings toward animals and the treatment of. A true vegan can not have anything from an animal product from milk to gelatin (no jello, no pudding-jello is an organism), no yogurt (the very extreme) no bread, noodles, you get the point. It can be a very unhealthy lifestyle if you are not very careful. You can get very sick from your teeth rotting (my old college roomate) to extreme malnutrition. But since the point is not to hurt any living thing, I don't know why breast milk would be excluded, you don't kill the mama to get the milk???

If a child or infant can be proven to be clinically malnurished and the parents refuse to do anything to improve the childs health, it is absolute CHILD ABUSE. That child should be taken away and placed in protective custody, and the parents should have their parental rights terminated.

I don't care what religion the parents belong to or what radical diet they chose for themselves. We have a responsibility to protect children from neglect and abuse. Think about the possible brain damage that can develop from malnutrition?

I can see the vegetarians point of view. As a rule, I don't buy or eat alot of meat products. I keep seeing pictures of slaughter houses and chicken mills in my head, and it's disturbing. I also worry about all the hormones used on livestock and anything else we aren't being told. I worry about Salmonella, E-Coli, Listeria, etc.

But it is a known fact that malnutrition causes developmental delay in children, so it is the responsibility of the vegetarian family to raise healthy children.
