Too many know it "allnurses"

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Who are these "know it all" nurses that frequent this forum? Are you here just to drive me crazy? I hate that we are no longer allowed to vent about our bad day or complain about annoying patients. Heaven forbid we say something negative or we will be labeled as "heartless" and "unprofessional." Are these people who know everything really nurses? Do they really deal with the public day in and day out like I do?

Sometimes patients need to be put in their place. That doesn't make me a bad nurse for telling them so. Yes I do have negative thoughts about my non compliant patient who doesn't have insurance and frequents my hospital 4 times a week for the same thing. Yes, getting your prescription filled and taking your medicine would save everyone a lot of time and headache... Whoops maybe I shouldn't have said that... that makes me a "complainer" and "uncaring." I guess I AM "what is wrong with nursing today."

And heaven forbid I wear my Tom and Jerry scrub top to work.. That makes me "brainless."

I bet now I will be labeled "cruel" or "harsh" for starting this "hateful" thread.

Oh and I better not use too many smileys!! :uhoh3:

I may be one of those "know it allnurses" I'm not sure. If you mean we should only allow happy, fluffy, bunny hugs to be posted on this forum- I hope AN closes down before that happens. I've rec'd my share of negative feedback posts, as well as a number of Kudos. I can't imaging either one causing me to feel differently about myself or my practice. If I'm getting flamed I stop reading that thread. I like that we can get honest feedback from our peers throughout the nursing community. If I was getting flamed every time a started a thread or responded to a post I would probably stop comming to AN but then again- if all I got was happy thoughts I wouldn't find the forum very interesting to read either. Like you I've seen changes in the forum that come and go over the years but the only change I've seen that bothers me is the HUGH number of posts from students. I like students, but sometimes I feel AN.com is turning into a pre-nursing and undergrad advice column. I'd like to see a few more "know-it-alls" starting and contributing to the threads. Us old folks need a community too.

I ve began reading these threads back in 2004 and it wasn't this bad(aggressive like) until about 2 years ago. Anybody agree with me it seems to have gotten worse?

Ditto!:yeah:

I'm not bothered too much by the students, it's all those schools!! Schools with wacky names! In the olden days everyone had heard of your school. Weren't there like 4 or 5? Now there are a bazillion Harvey G. Kerfluffel School of Nursing Spring Cohort 2012 anybody else?? 150 replies!

I totally feel you. They drill it into our heads in the nursing schools to be caring , professional, bite your lip, turn the other cheek kind of nurses. But lets get real. We are human beings, with very human emotions, and stress can be unbearable, if we can't vent our frustrations and defuse once in a while then we probably shouldn't be doing what we are dong because in the end everyone suffers, nurses and patients alike.

Is there a section for "rants"?

And maybe another section for "heartwarming stories"?

Maybe that would help?? Just a thought...

There's a section for heartwarming stories. I think it's called "Success Stories in Nursing". People can also write articles with heartwarming subject matter. Since the rants are more specific to certain areas or specialties in most cases, I think it's better to leave it the way it is.

Seriously?

How is this "eating" the young? She didn't say students shouldn't post, only that she wants to hear from the seasoned nurses as well.

This kind of over-sensitivity and knee-jerk angry reaction is unnecessary, and it doesn't do a thing to help anyone.

Oh Miranda, I didn't answer that one because I couldn't think of a polite enough way to do it. Sort of sums up the whole point of this thread doesn't it?

It doesn't make a person a bad nurse if they need to get something off their chest. I love being a nurse and there is nothing I would rather do. However, I have bad days like anyone else, and sometimes the patients are out of control or disrespectful. It doesn't matter if you are a nurse or not. There are always people that are not going to be nice and it helps to be able to talk about it with someone who undersands.

i've seen so many nurses chewing other nurses out on these threads for posting things...

i'm actually very vary of what I write now on forums. I rather keep personal case sensitive things to myself...

Like I said- I do like students and don't mind giving advice, but there are a lot more prcaticing nurses than students in the profession and it seems tha once they start thier career, the students rarely come back to all-nurses. Thanks for the feedback anyway. Like I said- all the feedback I get dosen't have to be positive. I'm always happy to get respectful criticsm.
