Some people have a lot of.....nerve....

Nurses General Nursing

Just when you think you have heard and seen it all.....:(

1. Had a pt who has been a DNR forever, at the nursing home and our hospital. Family is going out of town for a week, want the patient made a full code while they are gone....in case something happens in their absence....HELLO!! If the person does code, we have about a snowball's chance in Hades of reviving him. It should be illegal to change a person's code status for "family" convenience, guilt...geesh, how low can we go....

2. Have a couple of LPNs on our general med/surg unit. Good nurses, I would let them take care of me or my family any day....had a pt's family member come in the other day, saw nurse's name tag with her credentials and remarked "Hmmm, I don't think LPNs should be in charge of patient care." Well, honey kiss my behind....I was the house stupidvisor for the weekend....I told the LPN if she got anymore grief from that family just come and look me up and I would be more than happy to deal with that family.....:(

Some people just don't know when to shut up!!!!

I would simply invite the family to take care of the patient if they didn't like the care that was given, that usually shuts them up. I had a very demanding patient on the bell constantly, I politely told her I had other patients to attend to and if she required the level of care she wants then perhaps she should hire a private duty nurse, I also let the administrator know, they weren't happy about it but after talking to the family they actually backed me up! A miracle, that was about 8 years ago. This PIA would put the call bell on to have a nurse come into her room just because she did not want to be alone, wanted her tissue box moved 1 inch, etc. you know the type, I just would not play her game. By the way she was perfectly capable of doing things for herself just decided that since she was admitted she should play helpless, I hate that kind of patient.

Thank you for standing up for your LPNs. We need more nurses in management doing this.

I am bitter right now because I have a couple managers that have RN after their names that are not nurses. Not advocates, not looking out for the good of patients, not supportive of anyone but self... well you get it.

I will always stand up for a good nurse, regardless of her credentials...

I think some people are just arrogant when it comes to LPNs. Years ago, when I worked as a CNA in a nursing home this one old lady would always ask nurses if they were an RN or LPN. If the person was an RN she would make the following comment. "Oh good. You are a real nurse, not a let's play nurse. I found that very insulting to the nurses....:(

I had a patient when I was a student that was hospitalized because he had alzheimers and his "wife was going on a cruise. She knew that he needed tx, but waited until 2 days before she left to have him brought from the nursing home he was in. Well, when he got to the hosp, he had multiple decubs, and a swollen scrotum ,and "gonads". They were the size of a cantaloupe.... I'm not lying! The surgeon came in to eval and decided that surgery to remove "them" was necessary! (Duh, no doctor here, but man, I'm just saying!!) anyways, they tried to get in touch with the wife for consent, but low and behold, she had already set sail...after lots of meetings with the hospital attorneys, and "big wigs" the surgery was performed. They were able to talk to the wife from the ship, and got a verbal consent the next day. And she came back a week later,..with a tan, and like it was nothing...

So, I'm just guessing that this happens alot more than we think..

People can be real idiots sometimes.

We have had several ofthose too...DNR"S changed to full code while family takes a trip....hmmmmmmmm

Also want to vent about the LPN thing... I am a LPN charge nurse @ a LTC...family looked at my tag..and says "I want to talk to a charge nurse"I told her I was one...and she said no...A CHARGE NURSE>GRR>>

We used to get that question from family members occasionally in the LTC and the nurse would answer, "In my country (not born in US) I am an RN. One of them told me once that there is no such thing as LPN in their country. I've actually seen this answer satisfy the family member asking? (They never wondered why the indiv couldn't pass US RN boards???? And no, I am not saying that LPN/LVN boards are easier, I know they're not).

there will always be ignorant people the credentials don't mean a thing i have worked with excellent nuses LPN,RN(ADN,DIPLOMA,BSN,MSN AND PHD) that i would like to care for me or my family. likewise i have worked with horrible ones in all in all the afore mentioned groups . two of the best nurses i work with are LPN's. and this comes fron a Registered Nut Bull Sh*t Nurse :)

Changing your loved one's code status for your own convenience is extremely selfish.

Is it because they want to be there when he dies, or because they don't want their vacation interrupted?

Either way, it's one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard.
