:crying2: I am so upsest - I have been looking for a new job and feel like I have exhaused all of my options. i have literally spent hours on the internet (on this site, as well as others) looking for another job. I work the floor now and want to get out of that (more office administrative stuff) but I just can't find anything. I was so excited because I got an appointment with career services department at my alma mater and pretty much the first thing she tells me after i explain my situation is "i dont deal with health professions much so I cant really help you" and i got referred to the health professions college. I have emailed old instructors with no reply, searched all of the job websites, all the local hospital websites, i have even sat down and read the entire business section of the phone book. i am so unhappy where I am now i get sick before i go and dread going. i just dont know what else to do.

I guess my first question would be what is your educational background? How much experience do you have? Why are you so quick to get out of floor nursing? ( since your profile says you are only 23, i'm curious..)

You could always do case management, home care, work for an insurance company, etc. Those usually require your BSN.

Are you a nurse? You want a 'desk job' instead of working the floor? Have you looked at insurance companies? Pharmaceutical Companies? Fitness/Health Centers? Occupational Nurse jobs in Corporations?

You need to approach this like you would school - you need to do your homework. What kind of job do you want exactly? What field do you want to get in to...then...look at the 'qualifications' they are looking for to get the job you want. Get that experience first! You may have to travel farther, move, or take a job with less desirable hours - but you can find a way to get the experience.

What about taking some courses (online or at a local college) to show you are working toward a change of career. I have never had any luck finding jobs online - I have applied online but the follow up work is what gets you a job. Also, networking, find out where others have found "new jobs"

Finding a new job is hard work sometimes but it will pay off for you when you finally get a job you like ....

Are there any temp agencies in your area? You could always go agency until you are able to find what you are looking for and it would probably get you additional experience in different areas.

Where do you live? You may wish to consider relocating. Have you talked to a head hunter?

An earlier poster indicated that your age may be a problem. I would agree. No offense, but your post indicates a level of youthful frustration and urgency that may be turning prospective employers away.

Also, note that the economy is in a downturn right now. Employers may not be keen to hire non-nursing nurses at the moment. I am not a nurse yet, but I have 15+ years experience in management. When business is slow the first jobs to be eliminated are the non-revenue producing jobs.

Why the rush? Why not chill out for a while and work on the floor? Have you considered doing a an MBA or MPH part time while working as a floor nurse? If you are certain you do not want to work in a clinical capacity , more education would probably be useful.

I am wanting to get out of bedside nursing completely, i have been on a few floors and dont know why but floor nursing isnt for me. i am young, i have my BSN, and legal, quality control, and risk management are what seem to interest me. any help is apprecitated!

Time is on your side! Have you thought about further study? An MBA would certainly help you get a foothold into process related jobs like quality control and risk management. Plus all of the MBA's I know loved B-school. They report that it was interesting and fun. Have you looked at the legal nursing forum? I know there is a great deal of interest in legal nursing these days - but I have no idea how one goes about entering the field.I am sure the legal nurses out there could provide useful info.

i have considered getting my masters but i am so unhappy where i am right now. I am sick before I go to work, i cry before i go in, i just dont feel like i could wait it out until i finished my masters but i would like to find something now and still go back and get my masters.

Could you give us more details? What type of unit do you work on and how much experience do you have? And why do you want to leave bedside nursing? What job websites have you searched? Are you willing to relocate? Are you having difficulty finding jobs to apply for, or are you not able to get job offers?

i work on a l&d floor, i graduated in dec of 07 so not much experience. im not sure why i want to leave bedside nursing (but something tells me it just doesnt fit for me) but i got this job because i did my capstone there and they offered me a job so i accepted, i at least wanted to try it out for a while. i have always enjoyed the more "business" side of things, which is what i did before nursing school. as for websites i have searched, i would say literally probably 50-60. i googled nursing jobs and any website that popped up i would try looking for a job, both local and national ones like monster or career builder. I dont want to relocate, my parents are older and i want to stay close to help with them, and i am having trouble finding job listings, i have not had any interviews since i havent been able to find any openings!! :lol2: thanks for listening!

While on the wait list for the ADN program I started and just about finished a BA in Health Care Administration. I went adult ed and was 18 months into it when my number came up for ADN. I have 3 classes to take yet to finish the BA. Maybe you should look into something like that. The classes are accelerated. Good Luck

Your lack of experience could be a major difficulty here. Could you relocate if it was close to where you are now? Maybe try another type of unit with bedside nursing to see if you like it more?
