Should I be upset about this?

I'm feeling kind of upset about something that happened at work and wondering if I should be upset or if I'm just being too sensitive. I graduated from nursing school last December and passed NCLEX in February. As you know, the job market isn't so good, so when I was offered a part-time position at the LTC facility I had been working at as a CNA while in school, I took the job. I really need a full time income, so I said I would like to pick up as many extra shifts as possilble and if any full time hours because available I would be interested in taking them.

Anyway, in June one of the full time day shift nurses went on maternity leave. To make a long story short, she had multiple complications with her pregnancy and the baby, so she was on bed rest for a while and they baby was premature, in the NICU, and had several surgeries. Since I was always looking for hours, the DON asked me if I would like to take over that nurse's hours while she was on maternity leave. I said yes. Months went by and there was no word on when/if the nurse I was filling in for was coming back. I had asked periodically about how long she was planning to be on leave and no one ever seemed to know. Today I came to work and there was an internal job posting up for the hours I have been working. Apparently the nurse I was filling in for has decided not to come back to work.

I understand if it is the policy that the hours have to be posted and everyone given the opportunity to apply. However, I feel like since I have been working these hours for the past 6 months, when they were posted someone should have said something to me like "Hey if you're interested in keeping these hours you should put in an application." I did put in an internal application for the position today. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I get the position since I've been working it for the past 6 months.

Am I right to feel a bit miffed about the whole thing, or do I just need to get over it?

Sounds like a tricky one. Work the hours but still have to apply/ hmm

You are working the hours, but do not yet have the position. Do not waste your energy feeling 'miffed', instead, as other people have stated, prepare for your interview. The posting is a formality, but there may be other nurses who may be eligible.

Best wishes!

I think you should just let it go and if you feel that upset about it just site down and talk to your mananger about it. You said it was the policy to post the job so I think you are better off just letting it go and focus on getting the job. Good luck and I hope you get the job.

You were hired in a part time position. If you want to be full time, you need to talk to HR. You were not offered the full time position; you were merely offered her available hours while she was on leave, and that is what you have been working.

Imagine how miffed you would be if you had only offered to pick up those extra hours temporarily, but did not want them on a permanent basis, and your HR without consulting you placed you in a permanent full time position.

You should not be miffed, but if you want the full time position, you should talk to your director and HR. If you go in with a positive, enthusiastic attitude, and you point out that you have already been working those hours, that might go for something. However, if there's a wait list for a full time day shift position, they might not be able to give it to you. If there's a wait list, though, I wonder if they would even post the position. It sounds like you have a good chance at getting it. Just don't go in to the director and HR acting upset that you weren't offered the position, or feeling like you are entitled to it since you've been working it already. Be nice and positive, and you should have more than a foot in the door for it.

Good luck

Why "tricky/hmm"??

Yes, the OP is working those hours currently, as they are currently employed PT and available to do so. Someone who is employed FT on another shift may desire to work days, but obviously could not fill those hours due to their current hired position. Picking up available hours does NOT make one more eligible to be hired for said position; seniority does. A FT night shift employee may have been waiting years for a FT day shift position to open up, and it would not be at all fair for a new grad/new employee to be hired in to a newly open slot! Because of their full time committment on another shift, no, they could not be expected to pick up any vacated hours during that person's maternity leave but that doesn't negate their eligibility.

I do with you luck, OP, but don't think it's personal if you don't get the job, because it's not. You are still relatively new!

Thanks everyone for giving me some perspective. I talked with the DON today to make sure everything was in order for my application and she said she was glad to see I had applied, so I'm taking that as a good sign. The application deadline is December 21, so I won't know anything at least until then.

I think you have a great shot at getting the permanent job. Let us know how you make out. Keeping fingers and toes crossed for you.

If anyone is still following this, I didn't get the position, so it's back to part-time PMs for me :( DON said it was just a matter of seniority, nothing to do with me or my job performance. I'm disappointed, but I'm not going to waste my time being upset over it. I'm not a morning person at all, so I don't mind going back to PMs, just wish it was full time.

Well, since you are not a morning person anyway, maybe something better is down the road. At least you tried. Have a happy holiday season!

dont take it personally. its probably policy. u did smart thing by applying rite away. i hope u get it!
