Scare Tactics?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

My friend who is on staff as a PACU Rn at an absolute shit hole was recently told by mangement during a staff meeting that a current trend in healthcare is to lay off RNs. I told her that HELLO there is a nursing shortage & I haven't heard about this anywhere. I personally think this is a line of shit, especially when she told me they followed this up with the comment that "they (the nurses) should be happy that the hospital is willing to keep them emplyed". I told her there is no way I would have sat thru that propaganda. Anyway, has anyone else heard of this?

Specializes in LTC, ER, ICU,.

it may be for her particular place of employment, which i seriously doubt, but not everywhere as a whole.

Sounds like typical administrative mumbo jumbo to keep us slaves in line! "You should be happy to have a job" is such crap! Perhaps your friend should go to google.com and type in nursing shortage and download and copy a handful of the thousands of pages of info she will find.

It never ceases to amaze me how the suits propogate these stupid mind games! Treat us well and with fairness and we probably wouldn't see the need to unionize. Address problems as they arise instead of answering inquiriesinto problems with "you should be happy to have a job"!

They may be laying off nursing administrators and nurses working outside of hospitals (drug companies and pharmaceutical firms) but in hopitals??? Tell the suit to name the names of hospitals doing this!!!

Erica

I'm in SW PA also and most places can't keep staff- always ads looking for RN, LPN, etc... Of course PA is good for the "be thankful you have a job" mentality from the suits.

BTW- what facility is your friend at ? I want to be sure to avoid it!!!

i would have started crying....lol

Report suggests laying off nurses

Too many nurses are tending to Manitoba patients, according to a report commissioned by the NDP and leaked to Conservative health critic Myrna Driedger.

The $600,000 Deloitte and Touche report, which was conducted last fall, examines how hospital stays can be reduced. The pages leaked to Driedger suggest 180 nursing positions be eliminated from Manitoba hospitals.

Let us not forget -- Deloitte & Touche - along with Booze Allen -- wee the "genius" consultants that sold "Healthcare Redesign" in the 1990's. Remember all their bright ideas? Laying off RNs and replacing them with non-licensed 'multi-skilled' workers? Nursing staff taking on everyone else's work -- from food services to maintenance? Eliminating positions for Clin Specs, unit educators and charge nurses? Making everything into 'teams' -- translation, staff nurses have to do the management tasks without any extra pay. And my all time favorite -- everyone on the 'team' should dress exactly the same and have the same nametag -- no distinction between nurses and other 'team members'. GRRRRR anyone get the feeling that this is still a sore spot with me?

As far as I am concerned, their recommendations have absolutely no validity. I am really surprised that anyone is still hiring them! They cost an absolute fortune!

We just received word form administration that we are in a huge deficit for the next fiscal year and that basically, the cut offs would be starting with the nursing staff. We are currently down 4 full-time staff and 6 part-timers. We just hired 1 casual and 2 full-time, and now they are threatening with layoffs. Do they not remember 1994, when a great deal of Canadian nurses went south to the States. In 2000 and 2001, hospitals from up here headed down to try to recruit the RNs home, with no incentive. This will happen again.

I think a contributing factor to the shortage of nurses is, in a way, lack of job security and support. Deficits, let's threaten with layoffs. I'm sick of it.

My analogy of the lack of money and budget deficits is similiar to that of constipation, sometimes it doesn't work when only working from the bottom. Sometimes you really need to take action from the top.

Sunnybrook....

This particular hell hole is in Johnstown, PA. Anywhere near you?

I am a Canadian working in the USA, and Canada's healthcare is a total mess! From what my family tells me, Health Districts eliminate positions and then panic and rehire awhile down the road. From my experience in the US, any hospital that has told their nursing staff that they are despensible, lose their nurses! I would stick around and take administrative crap!

Here is the proper response to that line of bull, "eat shit and die".

Johnstown, PA OOOOOHHHHHHH!!! That explains it.

Admin. is probably saying that because J-Town is a small rural town and if the nurses didn't work their they'd have to travel to a larger nearby city. - ie. Pittsburgh would be at least a 45 minute commute.

Still, a scare tactic. Can't imagine there are a ton of nurses in J-Town.

there is certainly a nursing shortage in the UK I work on NICU and we are 16 full time members of staff down, despite this I think it is a great place to work.

Why? Nurses on the hole are fed up with poor wages and feeling put upon. With that and lack of training places over the last few years (improving now but you don't train nurses over night) and a aging population so a high proportiom of our girls are retiring. Its like swimming up stream

We have imported nurses from nearly every where (Philapines, Barain, Spain, South Africa the list goes on)

Colleen....I take it you are familiar with this one horse town?
