Salary negotiation

Nurses General Nursing

Anyone out there have advice on negotiating RN salary at a hospital? I'm a new grad and was just offered my first job. At what step in the process should this be done and how would you go about it? Thanks!

Got it! Won't be negotiating. Thanks!

Wise decision.

Unless you have some highly exceptional talent that you have not shared with us, I would take whatever is offered and take it happily. Focus on learning the nursing ropes and building your career, and save the negotiating skills for your next job.

Congratulations!

As a new grad, what could you possibly bring to the table to negotiate with that every other new grad doesn't have? You have no experience. They have no experience. Since experience and expertise are the things that tell a hospital what YOU can do for THEM and are the basis for negotiations, you haven't a leg to stand on. You take what you are offered and you act excited about it or you watch as your opportunity gets handed to someone else.

Unfortunately, we gotta take what we can get being new grads. (I am too) I don't make as much as I'd like, but hey I am making money! There will always be time in the future for negotiation and even raises!

With more than 20 years experience, I am still thrilled to be offered a position. It is not until I have been on the job for three years and find out that someone straight out of school is being paid $4 to $6 an hour more than me because they have something in common with the office staff, that I become dissatisfied, and do something about the inequity.

You want me to list my special talents? Have you got all day? :woot: Haha just kidding!

I will add something here - if you have any EMS experience, I wouldn't be so fast to dismiss it. When I was a new grad, I listed the experience and skills I brought to the position that most new grads did not have. I was able to negotiate for 50 cents extra an hour. It wasn't much, but it was more than 50 cents less an hour.

If you do not have that, then I would not negotiate and get as much experience as you can, so you can negotiate in the future.

Good Luck!

I'm interested in this topic as well. I was offered a job at a nursing rehab facility. Offer was at $26 for on call position. My friend says to ask for more; she's getting $31 at ltc she also knows a nurse working at the rehab place and says that everyone just got a raise in the $30's. I'm making more at my current job. Only reason I would consider getting the on call position is because it's closer to home. Would it be ok to ask for equal pay? I've consider getting the position at $26 and if In the future I were to be offered a permanent position I would negotiate at least equal pay. What do you guys think? TIA

Is it the same facility? Do you have experience?

It is not at the same facility. I have 2months experience at my current job. Lol... My friend keeps saying to ask more or "nope I wouldn't do it." I said that I didn't feel in the position to ask for more since I don't have experience. 2 months is nothing.

Yeah...you don't have much to go on in terms of salary negotiation with only 2 months experience.
