Registration Lapse

I think the new rule is not fair for nurses to have to wait for 6 weeks because they forgot to pay their registration fees on time. Mine only lapsed for a day and I have to go through the whole process. I think the NMC should give nurses a grace period depending on how long their registration lapsed. I informed my employer and I rang the NMC for advise only to be told that my best option is to work as a health care assistant whilst I waited to re-register. In fact the poll currently shows that a lot of nurses are unhappy with the new changes. When I voted it was 87% against the new rule and only 13% in favour. I hope the NMC listens when the poll closes.

Welcome to AN, I see this is your first post. Since you posted under General Nursing Discussion and not for a specific state or country. I am not familiar with NMC or what poll they took. However, it is your responsibility as a nurse to renew licenses in a timely manner. In my state they do not send a reminder. In fact, I do not get a reminder to renew my driver's license either. So as a professional it is your responsibility to renew all certifications (CPR/BLS, etc). Good luck, you will probably not gather any sympathy on this board.

Part of your professional responsibility is to keep your license active. It's not that hard to remember to renew it.

(I believe the NMC is the British nursing governing board.)

What do you propose as a fair amount of time to allow an expired license to exist? Certainly, you think you should be able to practice with a one-day expired license. What about 2 days?

One week?

One month?

A line has to be drawn somewhere, and yours was (wherever you are). You violated it. Pay your fine, jump through your hoops, and be more careful next time. At least in my country (US) there is very little asked of me in return for maintenance of my license. I make that maintenance my top priority.

You're lucky if your employer allows you to work as a health care assistant for the 6 weeks it takes to reinstate your license, where I am, if you forget to renew on time, you must take an unpaid leave of absence until your license is reinstated.

This post reminds me that I should put on my calendar with alerts when my renewal is due.
