Just curious if anyone out there has ever had another part time job different from nursing while working as a full time nurse. Was thinking of picking up an extra job over the summer part time just for some extra cash that is away from nursing. Just wondering what other people have done out there.

Many years ago, I taught EMTs, have taught CPR. and medical terminology. I also did some theatre work (unpaid, but tons of fun!) both onstage, and as a stage manager.

I've sold Mary Kay, and worked retail. Did a fair amount of volunteer work, and fundraising.

I always thought that it was mentally healthy to have outside interests, and did lots of stuff with my kids, including taking the Boy Scout Leader course. I'm just not the kind who wants to sleep on the ground in a tent!

Specializes in Pediatrics.

I used to work for a retail store while working on my pre-reqs and I have said that once I am a RN and am ready to buy a house I would go back and work the retail job at least part-time so I could get the employee discount on the home furnishings :clown:

Once a month they would have a double employee discount day and give the employees extra 30%-50% off coupons. I got my son a $100+ mountain bike for $35

Specializes in LTC, OB, Mother Baby.

Before I went to nursing school I worked in the restaurant business for many years. It's not for everyone, but if you have good people skills you should do fine! The extra cash is nice and the people you work with are usually fun

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

I've always had outside jobs:

1. For a few years I ran my church's food pantry.

2. I've been a volunteer firefighter/EMT (actually pre-hospital RN) for 11 years now.

3. Been a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader for my sons.

Specializes in Sec/Tech.

I should think it would be doable. My experience with a second job is different since teachers practically have the whole summer off to work at bagging groceries, tutoring summer school children, being counselors at nature camps, etc.

I could see most store hours working well on your days off.

Specializes in LTC, Med-Surg, GP Office.

I've had a website for 12 years selling horse related items. It practically runs itself. I work 3-11, so I do all my emailing customers, packing, printing postage, restocking in the morning, then drop off my packages on my way to work.

Specializes in Case Mgmt, Home Health, Geriatrics.

I love making jewelry and really am good at it, so I do shows and sell my jewelry at fairs and am currently working on website and etsy store to sell. It's a bsuy second job but so fun and a little dream I've always had.
