would you do it? has anyone here done it?

Our class was informed about this recent scholarship and i wanted to see if anyone has done it and what their opinion is of the scholarship. it basically pays for your tuition as long as you work for them for 2 years.

"The Nursing Scholarship Program is a selective program of the U.S. Government that helps alleviate the critical shortage of registered nurses currently experienced by certain types of health care facilities by helping needy students complete their registered nurse training. In exchange for the scholarship, upon graduation, the newly minted nurses work at these types of facilities for at least 2 years. "

if you or someone you know has received this scholarship, please post your experience with it. i'm having a tough time deciding on whether or not i should apply...

thank you all!

Specializes in public health.

Is the scholarship for certain degrees? I am thinking about doing either an accelerated bachelor or master. Can I apply?

I am applying for this scholarship as well as others. You have to be accepted into a nursing program before applying and the application is due May 6. It looks like low income students are highly encouraged to apply based on the instructions that are required to read and download. The type of facility that you must find employment in is the key. There is no set list of "approved" places to work, you must apply and then find out if hired if they fit the HRSA requirements. Another note, you are required to find employment within 6 months at a facility that meets their requirements.

Specializes in Psych, Onco, ED, Tele, Med/Surg.

I set my alarm, got up early, and applied the first minute possible (the awards are first come, first serve). They paid all my tuition at a private college. They gave me a $1500.00 per year stipend for 'usual and customary' expenses. They also gave me $1100/month living stipend. I'll tell you what--- I owed three years service full time to a hospital, nursing home, or home health, and I have done them all! I now make almost 30K more than I did when I started out three years ago. And my debt is paid off. I figure that was a $90K gift to me; all I had to do was get the grades, pass the boards, and go to work. Honestly,Thank God for this scholarship (and I'm not even religious)!!! They hand out somewhere between 800 and 1000 of these every year. Remember, First Come, First Serve. (but you have to be considered a 'disadvantaged or impovrished' student for the exact scholarship I won) That was how I earned my BSN.

Good Luck! It totally changed my life! I LOVE LOVE LOVE being a nurse!

And I just applied to FNP school at Ball State University! Whoo Hoo!

They start out with applicants with an EFC (expected family contribution) of 0. IF you don't know what that is, sign into your FAFSA and look at your SAR (student aid report) and it should list your EFC.

I hope I remember to apply when my time comes.

thanks everyone for your opinions!!

I bet that excludes most people.

Yeah, a lot I suppose. I was looking into that scholarship a few days ago, and I thought forget it. There's no point in even trying, plus I'm a military wife and don't want to have to be tied down at one job if we have to leave.

I am going to apply for this, I hope I have a shot. I know I meet all the requirements. Was there anything in particular that you thought might have helped you get the scholarship? The answers you wrote for you essay questions? The non-academic evaluation letter? And I am a little confused with what they mean by "student's discipline." What exactly does that mean? Any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated :)

Don't feel bad, I too was confused. I actually had to call the 800 number to find out! I was told to put "Nursing".

I was going to say that discipline just means your concentration (major) in school, but I refrained because why would it ask that on a nursing scholarship application? That's just stupid. I was afraid I was wrong or something.
