Instead of polling whether one is pro-choice or pro-life, I am going to do something different. I will try to use a less emotionally charged and hopefully more accurate terms - For/Against-Legalizing-Abortion (this thought was triggered by another member on this board in the partial abortion poll).

Here is the twist. The poll will ask you your feeling on abortion at different stages of development before the the mother gives birth. We stick to the clinical description so we are going to have zygote, embryo, and fetus. Oh, in the fetus case, the poll also put a special case for partial abortion.

Just so everyone is on the same page, follow are the definition of zyote, embryo, and fetus for the purpose of this poll.

Zygote - From conception to about 2 weeks. Toward the end of the zygote stage, it is probably about a millimeter in diameter. This is the stage before it is completely embedded in the uterine wall.

Embryo - Around week 3 to week 8. It is when the zygote is completely embedded in the uterine wall.

Fetus - Around weeks 9 till just before birth.

You can pick more than one choice in the poll also.

One more thing, when you vote "For", for example, it means you are for legalization abortion at that stage of development under all or most circumstances. If you feel it should not be legalized in most case with one or two exceptions, then pick "Against". If you have exceptions, then state your exceptions in the thread.

What else, when you vote "For" whatever, it just means you are for legalizing it, it does not necessary means you are "pro" it in terms of taking an active role to encourage it. So you may be for legalizing fetus abortion but you might even take an active role to discourage it, but the final decision is up to the person. So this poll is a little bit different, it is asking for "legalizing" it or not, not whether you are "pro" or "anti" abortion.

I hope I am not confusing everybody here.

good poll... I'll be interested in reading the results.

There's quite a difference between the abortion of a pre-viable 9 week fetus and a potentially viable 24+ weeker; being for the legalization of early fetus abortion but not the latter is not an option in your poll. "Partial-birth" abortion is not the only means of ending pregnancy in its later stages. Can you modify the poll to give that option? It seems as though only giving for/against legalizing fetus abortion in all/most cases is too broad and will be inviting a lot of potentially flamable responses, since this is such a delicate issue for so many.

It looks like I can't modify the poll (if anyone knows how, let me know). Also I only have a max of 10 choices in the poll.

Hmmm... maybe another poll on early/mid/late fetus abortion. We can use this thread to work on a new poll. We do need to define what is early/mid/late fetus, at least for polling purposes so everyone is on the same page. Why don't you come up with the question first and we can work on it together and then put it in a new poll?

Oh also, maybe you (or anyone who is interested) can come up with a different way to divide the different stages. It will be interesting to see if there is a differnce in terms of results. I just picked zygot, embryo, and fetus since that seemed to be easiest and everyone on this BB know what they are.

We can all figure out what would be a next interesting poll would be.:)

So if it were illegal to abort zygotes then would that make the IUD illegal?

So if it were illegal to abort zygotes then would that make the IUD illegal?

Hmmm... that probably would be a different poll... Have to think about how to word it... any suggestions?

My observation so far is that if a person think aborting a zygotes is wrong, then IUD or the recent FDA "abortion pill" would be wrong also. But this is off track...

The question is if aborting a zygote is illegal, would that automatically make stuff like IUD and the FDA "abortion pill" also illegal? Got any nurse attorney or have a previous career in law around here?

How can someone be a nurse, support their Nightingale oath, and believe in abortion?

I support a woman's right to make the choice she believes at the time to be the best choice.

Because different people have different beliefs.

And, although I greatly admire Florence Nightingale (see avatar!) I do not support the Nightingale oath. It's archaic.

For those who are against abortion- don't have one.

Wow - this is an old thread . . . and I'm surprised by how few responses it got.

The problem I have with pro-life and pro-choice, is that those who are pro-life assume the pro-choice people are "pro-abortion" - and I seriously doubt you'll find any pro-choice people who are "pro-abortion".

I wish abortion wasn't necessary - but for some women, it is the only choice they feel they have. That choice should be respected. I'd rather see a woman have an abortion, than find a fetus in a trash bin somewhere.

Pro-choice is NOT pro-abortion.

I worked in a ER for 8 years. I saw a lot of child abuse. Where are all those "Pro-lifers" when it comes time to adopt unwanted children, or "special needs" children of crack or meth mothers? All talk, little action.

I hope women always have the right to choose and I will vote that way, always.

Blessings
