No, I hated school but have been happy as a nurse. I hated my instructor .... and I hated the rigidity of school. I tend to a "free thinker" and found nursing school to be too confining for me. Also, I don't like providing adult med-surg care -- which is what a lot of what school included. I also hate early mornings.
I became a full time night nurse in a NICU and really enjoyed it. After a couple of years, I went to graduate school -- twice. Now, many years later, I set my own hours and work on many projects of my own choosing. For me, school was part of the "dues I had to pay" to get my current job.

Why I hated Nursing School:
1. Working HARD and instead of being paid, I was paying!
2. Doing all the grunt work
3. Geriatrics!! UGH!
4. Not knowing much and feeling incompetent
5. Writing out ENTIRE care plans (I had no computer then!)
6. Boring lectures
etc.
I LOVE what I do now...I think gaining confidence, being paid, and the ability to choose what you want to do helps! :)
I hated being taught by nurses who last practiced with Florence Nightengale. They had no clue about realities of nursing(or just chose not to teach them). Much of the instruction was outdated and focused on making beds with tight corners rather than taking care of the patients IN the beds.
So, finally to the point: Hated school, Love nursing!
I must like school because I'm back in school, working on my Master's!! Actually, I enjoyed school the first time around (diploma school in the stone age). The only thing I didn't like was when we would walk onto the unit in the morning, only to hear the nurses say "oh, god, it's the students"!! Call me corny, but I felt proud to put on that uniform and the dorky cap, white shoes, etc and go about the business of learning to care for others. I even liked chem and anatomy- weird, huh?

Did anyone out there hate nursing school only to find out that you love nursing as a profession? If so, what was the distinction? Why did you hate school and love the job? Just curious...thanks.
