ICU nurse... 1st pregnancy

Specializes in NICU.

Hey everyone. I've been a nurse for 5 years and now I am 11 weeks pregnant. I have never been pregnant before and not sure what to expect.

Now being an ICU nurse I'm required to do a lot of lifting, pulling, turning, and transferring of patients... often heavy patients. My doctor told me to continue doing what my body is used to. Well my body is used to lifting and turning a lot of heavy weight. I've continued with my usual work load since I found out I was pregnant. But now as I approach 2nd trimester I wonder how much is too much.

I don't want to be that pregnant nurse that refuses to do her job. I plan to take any patient that doesn't put me in harms way. I will only refuse abusive patients in DTs, CMV, and meningitis patients... My coworkers do well to look after me for which I am thankful.

I guess I'm just wondering if other nurses lifted, pulled, and turned patients late into their pregnancy... As long as they weren't high risk of course!!

Never been pg but congrats! (pretend it's root beer)

I jogged until I was 6 months pregnant with my last child because that's what I was used to. But it became too cumbersome after I popped out. And pop out I did - he was #4.

If you just keep talking to the doc about how you feel at work, he/she should be able to guide you.

The trick really is what you are already conditioned to.

Oh and congratulations!!
