I had to share this with my Allnurse peers! The JCAHO team that just finished surveying us was VERY supportive of nursing!!! Among other things, they said that such issues as getting signatures for verbal orders, completion of consent forms and assuring current histories/physicals on charts should NOT be the responsibility of nursing staff, but should be the responsibility of physicians under the scope of professionalism. :kiss Wheeee!!!!!

Those things have always been physician responsibilities. However, in this like all things nursing becomes the clean up crew for those who just won't do their jobs. That goes for housekeeping, pharmacy, maitence and countless others. Untold number of nursing house spent during my career chasing these people down and making them do what they were supposed to do. In the end when the patient was becoming to uncomfortable I would end up doing other peoples jobs.

That is great. I am not one to commend JACHO, but maybe they are pulling their head out of their butts!

We are coming due for JCAHO in March or so and the admin is driving us nuts.....Hospital President was on our floor yesterday and went into a room and pulled the call light in the RR to see how long it took to respond! Got ticked that it "took much too long and I saw a nurse just standing in the hall ignoring it"......wellll....the room he chose had a broken call light that had had a maintenance person trying to fix it that same morning and hadn't worked it out yet, and that nurse he saw had her back to him and was re-checking her meds (remember the 5 rights???) before entering the patient's room!!!!! I'm glad to hear JCAHO may not be the ogre everyone thinks.....

JCAHO is the Joint Committee on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. They inspect just about everything in a hospital & provide "scores" for how well the hospital meets their standards.
My facility had it's inspection last week. We did very well and are all glad that it's OVER...for now, at least.
Thanks eltrip. We have accreditation as well, but not called the same thing. Keep up the good work.:)

That sounds about right.

I'd love to know what those guys are paid. Anyone know? A JCAHO rep tried hard to recruit me once. I think I've still got his card somewhere.
It's good to have options.
