I am worth less for Christmas?!?!?

Okay so I volunteered to work Christmas because the poor LPN that works day shift has had to work all holidays for 5 years. She has a son going to Iraq and I felt I simply had to help her out by letting her have 5 days including Christmas with her family and son!:)

Then I found out for the first time in 7 years..my hubby FINALLY had Christmas off (he is paramedic). Uhgggggg..oh well, I still did a nice thing...and besides, I get off work at 1430...so not bad.

Then I remembered..oh yeah I get double pay because my organization appreciates people that work on Christmas! (all other holidays are time and a half). Yeah..well that will help me out quite a bit...so cool!:biggringi

WRONGO!!!!!!:angryfire

Because I am part-time, I don't get double..but time an a half. Now granted, I shouldn't complain but that hit me SO WRONG! What...my Christmas is worth less than anyone else working it??? Like my family is worth less for their sacrifice of their mommy being gone Christmas eve and Christmas day!?!?!? OH I was livid!!!!!!!! :nono:

I would understand this policy better if it was a detour from people working part-time, but they mandate that all RN staff to be part-time, and LPN's to be full for money reasons (sick I know!!!!)...so it isn't like it was my choice...so why am I worth less???? OH yeah..I am more expensive..UHGGGGG!!!!!!!!

Is this common where you all work? Do you feel it is right? I mean, I can come up with 101 reasons why adminstration would do this..but knowing their hiring practices I can blow each one out of the water!!!!!! (I work in Admin!).

Simply another tactic to save a buck to the expense of RN's! WOW, wonder why we are leaving the field or thinking about it????

My hubby is as mad as I am, and he said "well since you are part-time then they must abide by your schedule..so NO MORE working holidays under any circumstances...and you will submit a calander of days you are available and not and they will either abide by that or you quit!" Okay a little harsh but...I can see where he is comming from!!! I get NO benifits whatsoever, the least they can do is treat me as they would anyone else at that place for this Holiday they claim is to be the "foundation of the family unit..therefore double pay for you and your families sacrifice". UHGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!:angryfire

and in order to get your health insurance (which spouses and children can not be covered..got that last Christmas)..you have to sign a waver giving our facility full rights to your medical records (which I believe is illegal but they won't insure you unless you sign

WHAAAAAAAAT???!!!

NO WAY should anyone sign that! MAJOR conflict of interest, don't even get me started on likely HIPAA violations! I would suggest anyone that signed that agreement under duress (because that's what it was) can likely make a call to the insurance commissioner in your state. :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire

I can't even begin to express the words I feel for this so-called 'company'.

Good grief!

my facility gives NO bonus pay for any holidays. they employ many international employees and have international patients as well. to give a bonus for christmas also requires a bonus for hanukkah and all muslim, hindi etc. holidays. they say to give a bonus for one holiday and not another shows favoritism for one religion over another. how many jewish people get all the days of hanukkah to spend with their families?

Isn't Christmas a national holiday, though? Many (most?) places base the bonus on that fact, not the religious significance of the day.

at my hospital, the only thing we get for christmas eve and christmas is we get 2 shifts off paid (base pay only). but we only get paid for 8 hours of the shift. everyone in nursing service works 12 hour shifts. so basically, you have to use 3 holidays to get 2 paid shifts off. no differential, ot pay, bonus, or thanks.

I (as a traveler) am getting paid a grand total of $4.00 extra per hour for working the holiday. Definitely not time and a half.

can you tell me the percentage of jewish nurses that would have to worry about that?

What exactly do you mean?

I have yet to have gotten preferential treatment/pay for Yom Kippur/Passover (actually more religiously significant than Hanukah). And yet you do not see us griping about how "Hanukah is being banned" because someone uses the all inclusive Happy Holidays phrase. Or ignores our holidays.

LOL...The issue continues! :icon_frow

I work part time, after hours. I also work holidays 8-5 when the office is closed.

I get paid NOTHING extra, just my straight hourly rate.

Wonder why I'm not going in earlier to work xtra for my boss b/c she wants to use her PTO or she'll lose it?

As a salaried clinical nurse manager, I am not expected to come in on Christmas. If I do, I get no holiday pay. In essence I am paid the same whether I come in that holiday or not. But because I love my staff and they have been loyal to me, I will be here to help with any accidents, emergencies, poor staffing situations, etc so that they do not have to worry about it. It's part of my Christmas gift to them. Plus, I will be here for any residents who may be saddened by the holidays, those who got no visitors, no cards, no presents. I want to be there to sit with them, share coffee, share holiday memories. I've done that before on holidays and you can't imagine how much it helps these residents to know that they are not forgotten. I also have several little trinket type new items and lotions that I will wrap and bring in to those who received nothing and/or have no family. You never know what someone's situation is. At least I can go home after a shift here. This is the only home they have. And for some of them, its the only family they have. I don't think anyone deserves to be sad at Christmastime... or anytime really, but the sadness seems to be so much more painful on holidays. I feel like I am where I can do the most good.

Heh. There's a thread on another forum that someone revived from 1998. People don't seem to read the origination date before they post.

so we're not allowed to 'revive' a thread? some people seem to be bothered when people start new threads on things that have been discussed already, and the response is usually "do a search". and obviously, in this case, it is a seasonal thread.:santa1:

sometimes its nice to do something for someone-if anything happend to her son in Iraq you will have done something beyond special-I am sure she appreciates you-what a nice Xmas gift-you have the spirit
