I am tired of this attitude

This is MY vent for the day. If you are a person who thinks that becoming a nurse is the quick-fix to your personal situation, please realize that being a nurse requires more than intelligence (it CERTAINLY DOES), and ability to get good grades.

You have to care.

And I mean A LOT.

I'm tired of reading threads about people with or without advanced degrees trying to "speed through" so that they can get to the "top" specialties without even THINKING about their impact on the lives of people.

I don't hear the "I want to be a good nurse."

All I hear is "HOW FAST CAN I BE A CRNA??????? or NP????"

You know what else I hear????

ME, ME, ME, ME, ME.

Anyone care about the PATIENT?????????

Well if you dont care about the well being of yourself, how will care about the well being of your patient?

After working for my BSN for 8 years, (working fulltime while in school to complete pre-reqs), I can certainly understand where you are coming from.

well, think of it this way....

after the first clinicals in nursing school and cleaning up poop marbles from an old, aggressive and confused man, the people in it for the money will realize how much work and ick is involved.

and if they don't realize it then, they'll be lucky to skate through it and have their asses handed to them

by someone else along the way.

this is, by no means, an easy means to an end. however, i don't think we should bad mouth these types too much. think about how many "money" magazine and yahoo articles are devoted to how much money nurses can make. the problem with these articles is that they take patient care out of the equation.

we've all been puked on, pooped on, harrassed, made med errors, watched people die, had doctors yell at us, juggled 5 or more patients, been hit on, or almost lost it as nurses. chances are, if you don't love patient care, you won't stick around very long. :coollook:

On this forum I've read posts from some people stating that you really don't have to care about the patient, you just have to be competent at doing your job. I believe it have to be both, you have to really care about the people you're taking care of as well as being a competent nurse. There has been nurses that I've worked with that knew ALOT, very competent, but the patients hated their rudeness and lack of empathy. So, it has to be an equal balance of caring, empathy, competency, ect.

Everyone has different incentives, and it's not bad to want to further your career and better yourself, doesn't mean those nurses don't care about patients.

Well if you dont care about the well being of yourself, how will care about the well being of your patient?

How about making sure you're kind and empathetic instead of asking how fast can I get my RN so I can get my NP?

Where's the patient in all of this?

I just read a post asking the fastest way to be an advanced practitioner. NOT ONE WORD about being a good nurse....

I know! It drives me nuts! I have heard every excuse in the book, too!

I don't like poop... I don't like isolation... I don't like working shifts... I don't make enough money to do this job... blah, blah, blah...

And, you could not pay me enough to become a CRNA, CRNP, or manager. No thanks!

I don't think they are talking about the people that want to further their career and better themselves, I think they are talking about the people only concerned about shooting straight to the top with no real experience in between if that makes sense, this isn't in nursing but I sort of see where they are coming from but with a military perspective.

I had a dad that served 30 years and started at the bottom and worked his way up, then they started getting big into these college programs where kids were graduating and titled officers. They had no real experience yet he was having to salute these barely 20 something year olds because they outranked him and he said they walked around thinking they were hot stuff but they had no idea what it meant to be in charge of of x amount of soldiers at war and be responsible for their lives and so on. That the top ranks should be earned by time and experience and not rushed through with these accelerated programs that don't require much real world experierience.

Now I was not personally in the military I just heard my fathers vents for years but reading the OP posting this is what I equate it to and I can absolutely see where they are coming from. I didn't take it as them having any problem with people wanting to advance in their career and better themselves as they gain knowledge and expereince.
