I would like to know what the cost of living in Ontario is. I am from Oklahoma and high school drop outs definately do not make 20 per hour here. More like 5.35 per hour flipping burgers. I make 8. per hour at a convenience store while I am putting myself through school and that is considered very good money for this area. Even police dispatchers only make about 8. to start here. However, the cost of living is very low here. I live in a huge, nice house with 2 bedrooms and a bath downstairs, 3 bedrooms and a bath upstairs, a study, etc., in a decent neighborhood for only 375. per month house payment. Needless to say I can get by on a much lower salary than someone in say New York and California, or Alaska, or Canada.....

Nurse2bee, that house would cost you $800-$1000/mo here. And that is just if you are renting it!

Where in Oklahoma do you live? I'm in OK too, your house sounds bigger than mine and I pay $200 more. I used to have a night job stocking at the commissary at Tinker getting paid $10/hr. The only other job that I've had more than minimum wage is waiting tables.

I`m in Enid. I bet you`re from OKC? I noticed in the OKC paper jobs pay a touch higher than here. I`m buying the house from my brother and that amount is the actual mortgage payment. Taxes and Insurance included. The downstairs that I mentioned is a fully finished basement...carpeted, sheetrock, etc. My two oldest sons live down there....the creatures that lurk in the basement...lol...

We got maybe 1/2 inch. Only the very northern part of OK got most of the snow.
Nurse2bee is more north than me maybe she got a lot of snow.

We got about 8 inches in Enid. It could have been worse. I here Tonkawa got 15 inches!! The schools, including the collges were canceled for 2 days. Most of it is gone now. I think I would like living in OKC. Ilike shopping there. Has a higher crime rate, though.

There are 2 hospitals here, one public, the other BIA. We are a union hospital (not closed shop however). 20 + years experience, BSN (.30) and 2 national credentials (.20 each) (they won't pay for more than 2 although ER requires more), and clinical ladder (.75). Brings me to $30. Lots of folks make less because of the experience ladder. Can't tell you much about the BIA hospital.
Cost of living is very high though, we are a tourist economy.
On the other hand, we've got a good contract, use travelers and agency, many of whom extend their contracts several times and several have joined the staff. I've been here since 1984 with one 3 year hiatus in California.

    Come on over!

    1. Registered Nurse in a Wisconsin State Prison (Male) that houses Inmates with Psychiatric and/or Behavioral Problems or are Convicted Sex Offenders.

    2. RN with the State for 19 1/2 years. With the exception of a Brain depletion moment (where I left my current position and worked in Management at a State Mental Health Institute for 4 years), I have been at the same facility for the rest of those years.

    3. I make $28/hour base rate plus different add-on's. $1/hr for charge pay when sup. if off, .65/hour weekend pay, Double my hourly rate if I work on my weekend off, $1.25/hr from 7p-7a, and double my salary if I work 3 different shifts in a 2 week period. These wages are over 2 years old as we are currently in a standstill with the Sate Government over implementing our contract.

This has been very interesting and quite disturbing. As nurses we MUST take control of our profession. We are the BACKBONE of the health care industry and yet we are paid near the bottom of the scale.

    RN/BSN for 20 plus years..
    Home care in Minnesota(urban)
    $26.95/hr full bennies

left that job and started my own business 2 years ago
now I case manage private pay clients, I arrange for clients health care needs, be it long hours of care, visits, transportation to MD appt. what ever the client needs.
I also am into aesthetic nursing..ie) botox injections, laser hair removal, medical skin care, teaching other RN's the procedures and setting up medical skin care clinics for MDs...great fun and interesting...

    last year I grossed $130,000

As smart educated RN's we SHOULD be able to fix this problem. I have found being "independent" worthwhile but I have worked by tail off...but I've worked by tail off FOR MY BENEFIT.
Agency or pool nursing has raised the pay but do you realize those pools are making HUGE $$ off nurses? You can X 1.5 your current rate and that will be the agency's rate for your work. Sadly nurses give away their talents. Unions really haven't helped either...here in Minnesota I believe there are 6 or 7 different bargaining units for RN's...why would we want to dilute our power that way? Why not one strong bargaining unit?
I wonder if having one national RN bargaining union would be the answer? Or would a strong nursing organization such as the AMA be the answer? Our ANA is a joke. Do not let any one tell you there is no $$ in health care...it is a multi billion industry...
Food for thought...good luck to you all....
