How Can Hospitals Afford Not To Hire?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Everything leads to believe that new nurses are needed. The aging population, the baby boomers, the aging nurses working, longer lives lived, more chronic diseases present etc....

My dilemma and question is, how can hospitals and health care facilities afford not to hire newly graduated nurses. They should be getting the manpower from somewhere. Are they relying only on overworking the experienced staff only. If they rely only on experienced nurses they are using a constant amount of people for a growing population of people with diseases.

This is what I do not understand, either the hospitals are using workers from some obscure source that I am not aware of or there is a mystery going on here.

Let me know what you think or know, Thanks....

No mystery here in my eyes. The quality of care continues to plumet, no hiring takes place regardless of how bad things get and the pt. outcomes suffer.

Hospital admin. continue to make cuts that directly sabotage pt. care, but are able to do so because they have a very convenient alaby. When things go wrong, simply find the nearest nurse to place the blame on and feed them to the wolves. Once the lynch mob is fed and happy, go back to business as usual.

Thx eriksoln, I really liked reading your post. I too believe some of the hiring freeze takes place because of "creative" administrators.

Not much. Since last June on my old floor in the hospital, 9 people have resigned and 3 have been terminated... they have a staff of about 45 nurses so that's over 25% of the staff who have left. In that time, they've hired 6 nurses but one of them was let go. So, right now, they're working with a net loss of 7 nurses. As far as I know, there are no plans to replace those who've left and it's only going to get worse as they over-work the staff they do have and burn them out... more people will certainly leave (I know of at least another 5 who are seriously looking) and then the vicious cycle will continue. Oh, and the above numbers don't take into consideration that 3 nurses are currently pregnant (and it will be news to them that 2 of them don't intend on returning after their leaves) and one is currently out on maternity leave.

What is the job outlook for nursing homes and long term care center's?

LTC is even less likely to have adequate staff. Remember too that nursing homes do not generally have many nurses on staff to begin with.
