I've finally "escaped".......and hopefully will never go back to being a hospital employee!

I'm working for a company that supplies employees via a waiver state program to assisted living clients. One of my duties is visiting those clients...and ensuring their "assistances" are compliant with the care we provide...on the same lines as case management.

The other side of the job is visiting worker's comp. clients and doing wound care.

When the amt. of workers' comp. clients increase..and the assisted living clients increase I will have to make a decision on which side of this duo/sided job to choose.

I'm leaning towards the assisted living clients on the waiver program!

I'm done with hospitals! I read many of the posters here..and found that I was not alone in my feelings towards hospitals. I think when you get to the point of changing jobs from hospital to hospital thinking that the "next" one will be better then the "last one"..and find out that staffing for pt. load and management is the same from hospital to hospital and finally coming to the conclusion that healthcare today is in dire straits....and other then getting out totally...LEAVING THE BEDSIDE was the only option left for me!

Good luck to all of you that are still there. I'm sure there is some that do not feel the way I do....and bless your hearts for staying at the bedside!

In the last few years many, many people have come to that conclusion. The sound of the footsteps of nurses leaving the bedside has been actually thunderous. In some cases managment has respond with improved conditions and wages. But for the most part their response has been to run to the goverment begging for relaxation of restrictions on foreign nurses and increased spending for education. Most of them refuse to do anything about retention. It looks to me has if the number of years a nurse spends at the bedside after graduation is going down. What good will it do to churn out new nurses if the average amount of time at the bedside is 2 to 4 years? Well anyway, good luck at you new job, I salute you.

I left hospital bedside nursing over 5 years ago to do home health. I have NO regrets....the best decision I ever made.

I want to leave the bedside SOOO bad, but I'm afraid thet I'll have to wait until I get my RN...there aren't as many options with an LPN behind your name where I live. I did start taking agency hours in other hospitals just to get some kind of variety as far as the type of patients I have. The best of luck to you- I am so jealous..LOL

try going to a seach engine..and typing in

waiver programs

and then inserting the state you live in. They hire LPN's to make house visits on these assisted living cases..

FTell001........I wish you all the best. When I left the SICU in '91 to do W/C case mgmt it was like finding money in the street compared to working in that hell-hole. You will love it!!! Of course it has it's drawbacks, all jobs do, but none can compare to bedside nursing in my opinion for wear and tear on the old bod etc. Just be aware that all the dirtbags ain't on vacuum cleaners.

ya know Pappy...I really hated to leave the bedside..but when there was NO time for interaction with the patients......when I ran in the room...did what I had to do..then ran out ..and at the end of the shift couldn't remember a face I had seen in those rooms...

...well...I knew it was time to move on!

This new job is a company started by RN's! I've seen the owner discuss nurse placement with a facility....and heard her ask them.."what is your nurse/pt ratio staffing?"

and..then say.."we have quality employees here and I don't send them to JUST any facility!"..

She says "I'm not having MY staff abused!"...

I really like her and am amazed at her kindness...after all those years in a hospital..and the "take it or leave it" attitude of the administration!

Everyone I have talked to about her have nothing but KIND words to say about her and everyone around here knows her.....or has heard of her and we do NOT live in a small town!

I'm sooooooooo lucky to have stumbled into this and I"m counting my blessings!

EXACTLY! and..I feel sorry for those at the bedside who think they are importing nurses to INCREASE staffing. Those nurses are being imported to REPLACE those nurses that complain about the pt to nurse ratios being to high! There are plenty of nurses out there..that are staying at home and not working. They would return in droves if the staffing were better at the hospitals.

Notice when someone posts about the staffing of 1nurse/4-5 pts how they say there isn't a shortage at their facilities! What does that tell you?

I sometimes feel if this was a "man's profession"....the complaints would be addressed! Women worry about the pt. care if they "temporily quit"...and thats what the hospitals count on...

Hi everyone and Congrats to you FTell,

Case management and Home Health is something that I can really see myself getting into. I will start clinicals next fall and was wondering if most of the Case Management and Home Health jobs out there require experience in a hospital setting and if so, how much time in the trenches?
