Gift for Nurse

I have a friend who just got accepted into the nursing program at the college she goes to down in Florida. I'll be attending her "capping ceremony" this fall, which is their formal recognition into the program, and I really want to get her a special, meaningful gift. I've done a little research, but I haven't gotten very far. Are there any types of gifts that are traditional given at an occasion like this... pendants, etc. I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

My girlfriend brought me a stamp with my name and title on it. I cherish it to this day, and use it to sign off on my charts sometimes.

I have a $35 Prestige Medical watch with a fluorescent dial so I can read it in a dark patient's room, and military time on it for ease in charting. I love it.

A personalized badge with her name and credentials.

A four-color pen. A bunch of them.

A beaded break-away lanyard for her badge.

rite-aid, walmart, kmart, cvs - anyplace should have them papermate.

Depends on what you want to spend, I think. There are some really cute "nursing student" bags, coffee mugs, etc....or you could go up a little and buy a nice stethoscope or something....or you could buy a nice bag and fill it with things she could really use like the stethoscope, coffee mug, pens, GC for her favorite coffee shop (or whatever). There are also several inspirational items for RN students like pendants, bracelets, and tons of things with the nurse's prayer on them.

If you Google "gifts for nursing students" you should hit the jackpot. I should point out, though, that it's usually a bad idea to get her anything that says "nurse" on it...for now.

The "Nurse's Station" catalog has all kinds of nice nursing gifts from inexpensive to more than I would spend.

Davis Drug guide is a great resources book to give. I agree some of the other gifts would be appreciated and useful. You may want to give a gift certificate to a large uniform store so she can find some good shoes or other essentials.

The things I use everyday are my stethescope, my scissors (trauma shears), a roll of tape and some hemostats. I have a calculator in my pocket with a cheat sheet on the back of it for any formulas you might want at hand, phone numbers for lab, pharm, RT, etc. and a good comfortable writing pen. I also use a PDA for wealth of medical info.

Any of those things will eventually get used and reused and reused.
