I am not a per diem nurse, however, the large hospital organization that work for is ending per diem nursing, presumably at the beginning of the next year. We have been told that all hospitals are straying away from per diem, so... Read More

I doubt if Per Diem is going anywhere. Hospitals are always going to have call-outs and I was just hired as a per diem nurse in a local hospital. I also notice that all hospitals in my area are advertising for Per Diem nurses.

I know my hospital is planning on eliminating per diem staff. Or at least that's the rumor we have been hearing...

So... turns out this is no rumor. The per diem spots in major hospitals here are being eliminated. The per diem nurses are getting their employment change offers in May. It's not as bad as it seems, as they are technically only eliminating the tier 3 per diem spots, those nurses can take a tier 2 spot. However, apparently that only allows 20 hours of work per week, and many per diem nurses are taking two jobs because of that. Hmmm...

I am per diem at my job in Maine. I was just told yesterday that we are going to have to sign on as staff because of Obamacare they are going do away with per diem. I thought maybe it was a scare tactic as well but friends have told me that it maybe true. Let's hope not

I do know that the Hospital (Health System) I work for, which is a big one, no longer differentiates between floor RN wages and per diem. No perks for per diem here....interesting topic.

Yes..it is Obamacare's fault! My hospital is cutting my prn hours down to 2 shifts a week starting Jan 1, 2014. I normally work 4 shifts a week..at least! sometimes 5! I can't live off 2 shifts a week. They are doing this to prevent being penalized by Obamacare, which mandates they provide me healthcare insurance if I work more than 30 hrs a week. I don't want their insurance! I have my own! I want to earn more money an hour and pay my bills.

This is just ignorance about what healthcare reform requires. Your employer won't be punished for not providing you with insurance if you have your own. They would be punished if you worked a certain amount of hours and they didn't offer you insurance.
