digital stimulation, any suggestions

digital stimulation, help. Have any of you done it. Had to do it a couple of times and it was horrible. I would appreciate any advice. The person I have to do this to needs it done for 10 mins at a time for up to an hour. First, I don't have that kind of time. Second it is offensive to me. Third it hurts my finger. This person asks specifically for female caregivers, and that means me. I am not feeling good about this at all. :o

In our ER that would be a resident or med student job. I would have told the attending that I wasn't able to do it and maybe he'd have a better chance. NEVER refuse they can fire you for insubordination! I'm a union nurse:)

In ther ER I work at, a doctor wrote the order for digital extraction to relieve constipation. I neatly wrote underneath and signed it, do it yourself and handed it back to him.

I guess the orifices we deal with can be of choosing.I choose NOT to have to digitally stimulate ANYONE to poop. What comes out of the birth canal is just somehow so much more....ummm

rewarding. rofl.

I realize there is a need for dig stim and I am glad people are there to take care of it. It's just not my thing, I guess. I like the Old NICU saying:

"if the butt is bigger than my hand, I don't want to change the diaper"..... :)

Yep, I've said that a couple of times :)

I don't like working with the big people (or their orfices). I'm glad that there are nurses out there that can handle it. Many of them have told me that they are glad that there are weirdos like me that like to take care of babies that weigh less than a can of Coke, because it would make them a nervous wreck. I've also seen it first hand. Nurses will come up from peds to borrow some formula and after just a few minutes of hearing the bigger babies crying, monitors alarming, vents alarming, jet vents thumping, and seeing glaring phototherapy lights everywhere, visitors and staff scurrying about - they RUN to get out of there before they jump out of their skin. LOL - to each their own.

As soon as I saw that the pt requests a female caregiver, I wondered if the pt was male. When I saw that it was, then I knew what was going on. The pt is not having use do this for his bowel health, he is having you do this for sexual stimulation. My sister had a pt that did that, except he wanted stimulated with a flatulence rod. I am surprised that your superiors are not catching on too this. How gross that you are being molested this way, and nobody is advocating for you.

I had a similar problem with a pt with a penile implant who had to be I/O cathed, because he couldn't urinate naturally, due to the implant. Somehow, even though he self cathed at home, he could not in the hospital. He would call every half hour, saying he was about to burst. We nurses knew what was going on, and tried to put him on a schedule. (While we were cathing him, or when we were finished, he'd say, "that's a good little girl." GROSS!!!)He called the manager, and she told us we had to cath him when he asked. When the next shift came on, there was a male nurse (this nurse looked like Bigfoot, tall, strong, and hairy), and we assigned the pt to him! I wonder if the pt had to pee so often with that nurse on duty.:D :lol2:
