Ok, I think I am in a rut(ever have those) I truly think I do not like being a nurse anymore. I mean it is ok the money is good but I hate working nights, I dislike most of the people I work with. I cannot wait till they all leave at 11 and I am truly truly becoming unhappy and actually am getting anxious when heading to work. Do you think this is a phase or time to move onto another unit/career? This is how I felt about med-surg and had to leave he unit .What is your take?

Thanks:uhoh3:

Have you tried different areas in nursing? It would be a shame to "give up" on Nursing becasue of the people you work with. I will be honest and say the nurses are a rare breed and that you will ALWAYS face the challenge of dealing with at least one person you can not stand. I am in a current position, but I love what I do for my patients. that is how I get through the shifts with this person. Try a different area, maybe a clinic job or a specilty. Nights can drain you on its own, by missing out on many things in life. Get a day shift job and try another area...

Aero,

Welcome to LIFE. You're going to deal with the obnoxious, the know-it-alls, the gossipy backstabbers, you get the picture. If nursing was your passion, these issues shouldn't bother you at all. And remember, those that misbehave usually don't last long because word gets out that they're impossible to deal with. You do have the experience of nursing school, so you know what to expect as far as job requiremnts go. But you can't control other people. You can control the way you REACT to them. Don't be a part of the cliques that badmouth others or complain about every little issue. Sure, you may feel "left out"--but remember, you won't be miserable in the long run. Just know that your just desserts happen when they leave--and you can take a breath and get on with things. If you move to another unit--you'll just experience the same things.

Is the reason you dont like nursing anymore because of you dont like working nights? Can you change the shift? You dont go to work to make friends. I would say you want to be able to tolerate the people you work with. Disliking people at work is at every job site. Everyone has different views and personalities. This is just life and we all have to deal with it.

How long have been a nurse? This is important because if you havent been a nurse a long time maybe you need to give a chance. If have been a nurse more than 5 years in my opinion you should be use to the different personalities on the unit. Plus working with a bunch of women can cause be hard to hormones.

Now if you have gotten your year of experience on this unit. I dont see nothing wrong going to another unit. Because the grass maybe greener on the other side but there is still a septic tank.

Do you like Med-Surg? Dont leave what you like because of other people. Take care of your patients and stay focus. You dont have socialize with your co-workers. Only talk to them concerning patient care. Just my thoughts.

I have been a nurse for 3 years, have worked on med-surg and am currently in an ER. After reading another thread I think it maybe night shfit is the major part of it but I truly have never experienced such two-face not real great team work in my life. I want to transfer but there is no openings at this time. After reading the replies and rereading my thread I think it was just a venting situation. I do like my job and the patient care. But maybe an ICU setting where it is more personal and not so pt in for 2 hours and out.. Thanks for all your replies.. Will sit and think for abit.

Being awake all night is unnatural and after a few years can take a huge toll on one's spirit. Make sure you look after yourself on your off shifts - exercise, get some sun, eat a healthy diet, get a pedicure/massage/manicure/facial/haircut... find a counselor or friend who will listen to you unconditionally. Go on a retreat... take time out for yourself.

Nursing is a very stressful job regardless of shift - we should all be taking better care of our physical and mental well being.

its insane that we as nurses have to accept and do these things to remain "sane" just because we choose this line of work.
